Jay Inslee is an American politician who has served as the governor of Washington since 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 to 1995 and again from 1999 to 2012 and was a presidential candidate in the 2020 election.

Jay Inslee's Biography

Jay Robert Inslee was born in 1951 and grew up in the Seattle, Washington, area. He graduated from the University of Washington with a B.A. in economics in 1972 and received his J.D. from Willamette University in 1976.

After graduating from law school, Inslee worked in Selah, Washington, as a private attorney and city prosecutor from 1976 to 1984. He became involved in local politics in 1985 and two years later was elected to the Washington State House of Representatives, where he represented the 14th Legislative District from 1988 to 1992, as cited by Ballotpedia.

In 1992, Inslee was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for Washington's 4th Congressional District and served there from 1993 to 1995. He was defeated in his race for re-election in 1994. After running an unsuccessful campaign for governor in 1996, Inslee was a regional director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from 1997 to 1998.

In 1998, Inslee was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for Washington's 1st Congressional District and served from 1999 to 2012, when he resigned in order to focus on his campaign for governor. Inslee was elected as the 23rd governor of Washington in 2012 and re-elected in 2016.

He is the co-author of Apollo's Fire: Igniting America's Clean Energy Economy, which was published in 2009.

Jay Inslee and Trudi Inslee were married in 1972. In 1976, Jay Inslee and his wife moved to Selah in Eastern Washington, just across the river from Yakima. Jay and Trudi raised their three sons in an old farmhouse and grew alfalfa on four acres surrounded by apple orchards. Jay Inslee and Trudi Inslee moved back to Western Washington in 1995 and have resided in Kitsap County ever since.

Over the years, Trudi has enjoyed volunteering in her sons' schools and with local nonprofits that focus on the needs of women and children. Trudi continues to support social service programs and organizations that provide services for women and children who are victims of sexual assault, homelessness and hunger while also supporting early learning programs and health care for all.

After law school, works as an attorney with Peters, Schmalz, Leadon & Fowler (later Peters, Fowler and Inslee), and serves as a city prosecutor for over a decade, as cited by CNN.
