Interpreter Zhe ‘Shelly’ Wang denies involvement in Bill and Melinda Gates’ split

Zhe 'Shelly' Wang took to Weibo, the Chinese social media site, to refute the 'unfounded rumors' that she was having an affair with Bill Gates.

Zhe Shelly Wang is Bill's Chinese interpreter and has been working with the Gates Foundation since 2015.

Bill and Melinda Gates announced that they’re heading for a divorce after 27 years of marriage. The two shared that they were unable to move forward as a couple and had mutually decided to part ways. However, there were claims that the rift in their marriage came because of Bill’s Chinese interpreter, Zhe Shelly Wang.

The couple were married in 1994 in Hawaii. They met after Melinda began working at Microsoft as a product manager in 1987.

It was later revealed that Bill holidayed with his ex-girlfriend every year in North Carolina with Melinda’s permission.

While Zhe stayed quite for a while ever since rumours began, but there came a point where she thought it was best to address them.

Taking to a Chinese version of Twitter, Weibo, Zhe wrote: “I thought that the rumours would go away by themselves, but I did not expect the rumours to become more and more crazily spread.”

“How many books can I read, so why spend time on the unfounded rumours?

“I would like to thank everyone for their concern and help in dispelling the rumours through private messages in the past 24 hours.

While Zhe has clarified her stance now, she’s been a part of the Gates Foundation since 2015.

Able to speak in six languages, Zhe was reportedly born in Guangzhou but moved to the US. She holds a business degree from Brigham Young University and also owned a restaurant in Utah.

The 36-year-old Wang lives in Seattle and is unmarried. She is a professional translator who has done work for the Yale School of Management and Harvard Business School, as well as the Gates Foundation.

Li Donglei, who is a close friend of Wang, said, "She is a former colleague of mine, a very clean girl, and a person I admire. I don't believe she would get involved in other people's marriages. I think it is entirely my instinct that Wang Zhe can't do this kind of thing."

Li said that Wang grew up in the Chinese port city of Guangzhou, and later immigrated to the United States. According to Li, Wang owned a restaurant in Provo, Utah from 2006 to 2008.

Wang is proficient in Mandarin, Cantonese, and English.
