What time is it in Hawaii
What time is it in Hawaii

Hawaii is a constituent state of the United States of America. The Hawaii–Aleutian Time Zone observes Hawaii–Aleutian Standard Time (HST) by subtracting ten hours from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC−10:00). The clock time in this zone is based on the mean solar time of the 150th meridian west of the Greenwich Observatory.

What is Hawaii Standard Time – HST Time Zone?

Hawaii Standard Time (HST) is 10 hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). This time zone is in use during standard time in North America, Pacific.

Unlike most states in the US, Daylight Saving Time is not observed in Hawaii, which maintains its 10 hours difference from GMT throughout the year.

From 1900 until 1947, UTC−10:30 was used as standard time in Hawaii.

French Polynesia uses UTC−10:00 for its major cities. The Cook Islands also use the same time. These areas do not use DST. "Hawaii–Aleutian Time Zone" is a U.S. term and for that reason, the Polynesian areas are not considered to be a part of the Hawaii–Aleutian Time Zone.

The largest city in the Hawaii–Aleutian Time Zone is Honolulu; the Honolulu Metropolitan Area is the largest metropolitan area in the zone.

What is the Hawaii time zone difference?

The answer is that it depends on where you are now. Hawaii is anywhere from 2 to 5 or 3 to 6 hours behind the rest of the US mainland, depending upon whether or not it’s Daylight Savings. Hawaii is one of the few states in the US that does not observe Daylight Savings Time.

Most of Arizona and parts of Indiana also do not observe Daylight Savings Time. Daylight Savings now begins on March 13 and ends on November 6 of each year.

What is Daylight Saving Time?

Daylight saving time (DST), also known as daylight savings time or daylight time (United States, Canada, and Australia), and summertime (United Kingdom, European Union, and some other countries), is the practice of advancing clocks (typically by one hour) during warmer months so that darkness falls at a later clock time. The typical implementation of DST is to set clocks forward by one hour in the spring ("spring forward") and set clocks back by one hour in autumn ("fall back") to return to standard time. As a result, there is one 23-hour day in late winter or early spring and one 25-hour day in the autumn.

World map. Europe, most of North America, parts of southern South America and southeastern Australia, and a few other places use DST. Most equatorial Africa and a few other places near the equator have never used DST as the seasons are not marked by drastic changes in light. The rest of the landmass is marked as formerly using DST.

The idea of aligning waking hours to daylight hours to conserve candles was first proposed in 1784 by the American polymath Benjamin Franklin. In a satirical letter to the editor of The Journal of Paris, Franklin suggested that waking up earlier in the summer would economize candle usage and calculated considerable savings.[1][2] In 1895, New Zealand entomologist and astronomer George Hudson seriously proposed the idea of changing clocks by two hours every spring to the Wellington Philosophical Society. He wanted to have more daylight hours to devote to collecting and examining insects. In 1907, British resident William Willett presented the idea as a way to save energy. Despite receiving some serious consideration, it was never implemented.

Hawaii is 3 hours behind the western states like California, Oregon, Washington, and Nevada during Pacific Daylight Time (PDT). So when it’s 8:00 am Pacific Daylight Time, don’t call your buddy in Hawaii. This is because it’s 5:00 am in morning in Hawaii and he’s probably still sleeping. But when it’s Pacific Standard Time, it’s only a 2-hour difference.

During Daylight Savings Time, Hawaii Standard Time (HST) is 4 hours behind Mountain Time, 5 hours behind Central Time, and 6 hours behind Eastern Time. When it’s Standard Time, the preceding time zone differences are respectively 1 hour less.

Some websites say that Hawaii has its own time zone. At least from what we can see, that may not be totally correct. For some odd reason, Hawaii is in the Hawaii-Aleutian Time Zone. This means a small part of Alaska shares the same time zone as Hawaii. But since Alaska observes Daylight Savings, and Hawaii does not, during this time, Hawaii definitely has its own time zone.

Hawaii Time Zone Difference From Asia-Pacific Countries

From Asia, the time difference is greater because it’s one day ahead of Hawaii and the rest of the US. Hawaii is 19 hours behind Japan and Korea. Hawaii is 18 hours behind China.

Traveling to Hawaii from the US mainland has some time difference benefits. For example, if you leave on a 5-hour flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu and depart at 8:00 am PDT, you’ll be arriving in Honolulu at 11:00 am, HST. So you gained 3 hours just by flying to Hawaii and you will land in Honolulu just in time for a nice Hawaiian lunch.

What places have the same time zone as Hawaii?

Although the timezone is named "Hawaii Standard Time", it has mostly political reasons. It simply means that eg beginning and ending of daylight saving time always uniformly apply here.
