The Making of the National Floral Emblem

September 23, 1986, thе House оf Representatives passed a joint resolution naming thе rose аѕ thе “national floral emblem” оf thе United States. Thе Senate hаd passed thе resolution in 1985. Thе measure thеn wеnt tо President Ronald Reagan. Hе signed thе resolution intо law оn October 7, 1986 in a ceremony in thе White House Rose Garden.

On November 20, 1986, President Reagan signed Proclamation 5574: Thе National Floral Emblem оf thе United States оf America: Thе Rose. (Note: a proclamation announces аn асt bу thе government; it dоеѕ nоt hаvе thе effect оf law.)

The Official Flowers In Each US State

Other flowers alongside the rose were proposed as the national floral emblem before the former was selected. One such flower is the native marigold, a brightly colored herbaceous flower that resembles sunflowers. The proponents argued that the flower can be found in all the 50 states and can endure the extreme temperature. They also added that the robustness of the native marigold depicted the character of the pioneers of the nation. Unlike the rose, native marigold is native to the Americas and nowhere else and many thought it would be designated the national floral emblem on that basis. However, the debate on the national flower was put on hold until later in the 1980s, culminating in designating the rose as the national flower.

Louisiana - Magnolia

Magnolia trees can grow in different climates throughout the United States, but the waxy leaved tree flourishes in the southeastern part of the country. Louisiana designated the tree's flower, the giant magnolia with its thick petals, as the official state flower in 1900.

When it comes to house plants, orchids are among the most difficult to maintain. There are 46 species of orchid that grow in Minnesota, one of which is the showy lady's slipper which has been the official state flower since 1902 and has been protected by state law since 1925.

Missouri - Hawthorn

This bushy, flowering tree can grow up to around 25 feet tall. Even though they're part of the rose family, they produce fruit similar to an apple which makes for great jams and jellies.

Arizona - Saguaro cactus blossom

Upwards of 40 feet tall, the Saguaro cactus blossom has been Arizona's state flower since 1931. The Saguaro can live up to 150 years and is endemic to the Sonoran Desert. The beautiful white blossoms show up in May and June.

Alaska - Forget-me-not

For a brief period of time, from late June to late July, the forget-me-nots of Alaska bloom in the state's alpine regions. The dark blue backdrop behind the Big Dipper constellation on Alaska's state flag, represents not just Alaska's vast sky but also a field of forget-me-nots.

Mountain laurel goes by many names – ivybush, lambkill, sheep laurel and spoonwood (because Native Americans used the plant to make spoons), to name a few. The colonists first reported seeing it in 1624. And in 1907, the pleasantly fragrant mountain laurel became the official state flower of Connecticut.

How Are Flowers Chosen?

According to Glynda Nord in her book Official State Flowers and Trees: Their Unique Stories, the history behind the selection of state flowers and trees is rich with political intrigues, legends, deceptions, and humor. This makes the story behind the selection for each flower intriguing, interesting, and unique.

Over the course of a century, each state went through the arduous (at times) task of choosing a flower. A few American territories like Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands have also chosen an official flower to represent their people and their islands.

Most of these flowers were nominated by a group of citizens or an organization after casting votes. This is the case for California’s golden poppy. In Nord’s book, she details how in 1890 the California State Floral Society voted for the contenders. The final three nominees were the matilija poppy, mariposa lily, and the California golden poppy. After tallying the votes the golden poppy won by a landslide. Soon after, residents of California acknowledged the golden poppy as their state flower but the move to make it more official through legislation proved more difficult and time-consuming.

It took over a decade of lobbying before a poppy bill was eventually introduced on the Senate floor. In January 1903 Senate Bill No. 251 designating the golden poppy as the official state flower of California was finally passed. “On March 2, 1903, Senator Smith and Assemblyman Bliss, who introduced the bill, placed a mound of poppies on the desk of the presiding officer of the Senate,” Nord narrates.
