What Is The Finland National Anthem
The Finnish national anthem, with words by Johan Ludvig Runeberg and music by Fredrik Pacius, was first performed in 1848 by students celebrating Flora Day (May 13) in a meadow belonging to Kumtähti Manor in Helsinki.
J.L. Runeberg, headmaster of Borgå Lyceum in Porvoo, had written the original text in Swedish, called “Vårt land” (Our Land), two years earlier. The poem was published in autumn 1846 as the prologue to Runeberg’s Fänrik Ståls sägner (The Tales of Ensign Stål), a collection of 35 heroic ballads set in the days of the War of Finland in 1808–09. As a result of this war, Sweden ceded Finland to Russia in the 1809 Treaty of Hamina.
Runeberg’s aim was to stir Finnish patriotic feeling with his epic. He is said to have been inspired to write “Vårt land” by Mihaly Vörösmarty’s “Szózat,” the Hungarian national anthem published in 1836. Until well into the 20th century, Finns responded strongly to the idealistic and political idealism of Fänrik Ståls sägner and “Vårt land.” Runeberg was promptly elevated to the status of national poet.

History of The Finland National Anthem
An early example of Romantic nationalism, the original poem was composed in 1846 but not published until 1848. Its 11 stanzas served as the introduction to the verse cycle The Stories of Ensign Stl ("Fänrik Sthls sägner"). The current Finnish language version, though commonly assigned to Paavo Cajander's 1889 translation of Ensign Stl, actually dates back to Julius Krohn's 1867 translation.
Finland's coat of arms and flag are both defined by law, but the country's lack of a national song is not. On the contrary, its status has been established over time by custom.
Sung in both Finnish and Swedish at official events, it is taught to children in schools. It is a staple at the Olympics and other major sporting events. Attempts to switch to a Finnish language version began in the 1880s and 1920s, but were abandoned by the 1930s. Several Finns have advocated that "Finlandia" by Jean Sibelius, with lyrics by V.A. Koskenniemi (Finnish) and Joel Rundt, become the national anthem of Finland (Swedish).
Pacius reportedly wrote the song in just four days. It was a hit all through the nineteenth century, but it wasn't until after Pacius died that it became the official national anthem.
Why do Finland and Estonia have the same anthem?
The national anthems of Finland and Estonia share the same musical theme.
In a different key and with new lyrics by Johann Voldemar Jannsen, Pacius's jubilant tune serves as the basis for Estonia's national anthem.
It is also considered the national song of the Balto-Finnic Livonians, who once inhabited northern Latvia and southwestern Estonia.
Their national anthem is called "Min izāmō" (My Fatherland) and was written by the educator and activist Krli Stalte.

A golden land, so brave.
We love our rippling brooks, so bright,
Our gushing streams, so strong,
