Craziest Things in Canada

Different cultures and peoples can be found in every corner of the globe. There are subtle distinctions in their politics, education system, and, most importantly, health care system that set them apart from one another.

We are not trying to convince anyone to relocate to Canada; however, after hearing about their health care system, it may be difficult to seriously consider doing so. A bottle of genuine Canadian maple syrup is an essential memento to bring back from a trip to the land of pancakes and waffles.

9. Milk In A Bag

As was previously mentioned, bagged milk is a common commodity in Canada. No one, not just Americans, has ever heard of this idea before. It may seem complicated to pour milk from a bag, but as the man up top demonstrated, it's actually quite easy.

Don't be surprised to see large displays of bagged milk if you shop for groceries in Ontario, Quebec, or anywhere else in Canada. Maybe you should buy a bag as a memento to show off to your friends and family.

8. Two Different Languages

Having two official languages in a country is unusual, at least in the eyes of Americans. There are two official languages in Canada: English and French. There are other languages spoken in the country, but these are the most common ones.

If you start speaking English and get a French reply, that's to be expected. While many Canadians are bilingual, French is the preferred language. The majority of the population of one of Canada's largest cities is bilingual, but they still speak Quebec French most of the time.

7. Have a Cocktail served with a Side of Toe

Have a Cocktail served with a Side of Toe

There is a local drink called a "sour toe cocktail" in Dawson City, Yukon. So, why do you inquire thus? The Downtown Hotel has a mummified toe on display to impress guests. If you swallow the toe, you'll have to pay a $2,500 fine. The Sour Toe Cocktail Club now boasts a membership of over 60 thousand people. Are you up next? Mtlblog inquired.

6. It's Illegal To Take A Bandage Off In Public

Many of us have probably been caught ripping off an old bandage in public, but the York Regional Police say that this is against the law in Canada. Despite how absurd it may seem, the law states that you are breaking the law if you remove your bandage in a public place like a park or on a sidewalk street.

5. Go to the Doctor for Free.

In all seriousness, you just present your health insurance card and leave. It defies logic. (I've written elsewhere that getting insurance in Canada is more complicated than many Americans think it is, but once you have things in place, going to a clinic is really easy).

4. It's Illegal To Pay With Too Many Coins

Many Canadians would like to get rid of their spare change by buying a candy bar at the nearest gas station, but doing so is against the law.

The Canadian government has set a limit on the amount of coins that can be used before doing so becomes illegal. For instance, you can't pay with $30 in loonies and $5 in nickels.

3. Sell Weird Fondue meats at the Grocery Store.

I don't know if this is unique to the province of Quebec or to the country of Canada as a whole, but here in Quebec, people love to make fondue with all sorts of unusual meats. The local supermarket sells "everything from horse to camel" in their freezer section.

2. Are OBSESSED with Tim Hortons.

Tim Hortons is a Canadian coffee and doughnut chain with widespread renown across the country. Every block seems to have at least one fast food joint, and those that don't can be found pretty much anywhere a coffee machine and doughnuts can be found. Their "Timbits," or doughnut holes, are a staple.

1. Paint Your Garage Door Purple? Not a Good Idea.

If you want to give your house a new look by painting the garage door, purple may not be the best choice. Donell Law Group claims that residents of Kanata, Ontario are forbidden by city ordinance from using the color purple on their garage and front doors.

Some of these laws may not apply in all areas of Canada, but it's still smart to be aware of them just in case, as Narcity pointed out. This is especially true if you plan on taking your pet rat, snake, and llama with you, using only coins, and holding a three-day garage sale before you leave.
