Who is Nostradamus?

Born on 14 or 21 December, 1503, Nostradamus was a French physician and an esteemed seer who published several prophecies that have become widely known.

Most of Nostradamus' life composed of disasters such as plagues, earthquakes, wars, floods, invasions murders, droughts and battles. He has been credited with predicting numerous significant events including the French Revolution, the rise of Napoleon and Hitler, the development of the atomic bomb and the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre.

In the centuries since his death, people have credited him with accurately predicting pivotal events in history, from the French Revolution to the rise of Adolf Hitler to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and even the 2020 coronavirus. His book, The Prophecies, was published in 1555, and has since earned him worldwide fame. According to Nostradamus, the world is slated to end in the year 3797.

By 1554, Nostradamus’ visions had become an integral part of his works in the almanacs, and he decided to channel all his energies into a massive opus he entitled Centuries. He planned to write 10 volumes, which would contain 100 predictions forecasting the next 2,000 years. In 1555 he published Les Prophesies, a collection of his major, long-term predictions. Possibly feeling vulnerable to religious persecution, he devised a method of obscuring the prophecies’ meanings by using quatrains—rhymed four-line verses—and a mixture of other languages such as Greek, Italian, Latin and Provencal, a dialect of Southern France. Oddly enough, Nostradamus enjoyed a good relationship with the Roman Catholic Church.

It is believed he never faced prosecution for heresy by the Inquisition because he didn’t extend his writings to the practice of magic. His popularity grew and he became one of the most famous figures during the Renaissance.

Nostradamus’s Predictions for 2021-Fact-check

1.Claim

The photo of Nostradamus going viral on social media claims that the French philosopher had predicted the ongoing pandemic in the 16th century.

Rating

No evidence suggests whether Nostradamus actually put forward such a prophecy thus the information making rounds on social media is indeed False.

Origin

Amidst the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many Twitter users shared a photo claiming that Nostradamus had predicted the ongoing coronavirus back in the 16th century. The photo does not claim in which book Nostradamus wrote the following prophecy. The events written down in the photo have reportedly not featured in any of Nostradamus' philosophy books either. The claim: Nostradamus predicted there would be a zombie apocalypse in 2021 and the CDC is giving advice on how to prepare for it

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has provided health and safety guidelines for pandemics and according to social media users, it's now offering advice on how to survive a zombie apocalypse.

A viral March 4 Instagram post by the page UberFacts correlates the CDC's zombie guidance to Nostradamus' purported prediction of a zombie apocalypse taking place in 2021.

"Back in the 16th century, French astrologer Nostradamus predicted that there would be a zombie apocalypse in 2021," reads a screenshot of a tweet from UberFacts. "The CDC is giving advice on how to prepare, just in case."

Accompanying the tweet is an image of zombies walking in a forest and the caption of the post links to a "Zombie Preparedness" page on the CDC's site. The post has over 73,000 likes. USA TODAY reached out to the page for comment.

2.Claimed Nostradamus passage is not evidence of zombie apocalypse prediction

The claim that Nostradamus predicted a zombie apocalypse would take place originates from a post on the site YearlyHoroscope.org. The site lists a number of purported "Nostradamus 2021 predictions" such as bitcoin, solar storms and a comet hitting Earth.

The article claims that Nostradamus, also known as Michel de Nostradame, predicted a Russian scientist would create a biological weapon and produce a virus that would turn humans into zombies, according to one of his prophecies from a book discovered at the National Library in Rome "which is believed to belong to him."

The purported quote reads, "Few young people: half-dead to give a start. Dead through spite, he will cause the others to shine, And in an exalted place some great evils to occur: Sad concepts will come to harm each one, Temporal dignified, the Mass to succeed. Fathers and mothers dead of infinite sorrows, Women in mourning, the pestilent she-monster: The Great One to be no more, all the world to end.”

While some believe the passage is evidence of a zombie apocalypse prediction because of words such as "half-dead" and "great evils" there is no evidence that he was referring to zombies.

Several historians and scholars also note that Nostradamus' predictions are often vague, leaving a lot of room for different interpretations.

His "popularity seems to be due in part to the fact that the vagueness of his writings and their lack of specific dates make it easy to selectively quote them after any major dramatic events and retrospectively claim them as true," History.com reported.

Some scholars believe Nostradamus's was not writing to be a prophet, but rather, writing to comment on events and people of his time, according to History.com

The claim that Nostradamus predicted the coronavirus pandemic has been previously debunked by Reuters. A YouTube user also falsely claimed that Nostradamus predicted a 9.8 earthquake would hit California on May 28, 2015.

While it's true that the CDC's website has a "Zombie Preparedness" page, the tips serve as a practical guide for real emergency situations such as hurricanes, earthquakes or floods, USA TODAY reported.

"As it turns out what first began as a tongue-in-cheek campaign to engage new audiences with preparedness messages has proven to be a very effective platform," the CDC's site reads. "We continue to reach and engage a wide variety of audiences on all hazards preparedness via 'zombie preparedness.'"

A "Zombie Preparedness" blog post, which has been on the CDC's site since May 2011, says "you may laugh now, but when it happens you’ll be happy you read this" and that you may learn about how to prepare for a real emergency.

If zombies were to start roaming the streets, the CDC would conduct an investigation and provide assistance to states until it could determine how to treat and stop the outbreak, the site says.

Which Nostradamus prophecies have come true so far?

1. The death of King Henry II

Nostradamus is widely credited with predicting the death of Henry II of France in 1559.

The French king died just four years after Les Propheties was published when he was wounded during a jousting match.

Nostradamus supposedly predicted his death in Century 1, Quatrain 35.

The passage reads: "The young lion will overcome the older one,

"in a field of combat in single fight:

On September 2, 1666, a fire broke out in central London that grew to consume entire swathes of the medieval city.

The fire is estimated to have destroyed more than 13,000 houses and destroyed the homes of some 70,000 people.

A hundred years earlier, Nostradamus is said to have predicted the fire in Century 2, Quatrain 52.

Perhaps the most bizarre, however, is the claim Nostradamus knew this would happen.

4.World War II

World War II (1939) remains the greatest holocaust that mankind has ever witnessed. It was also the only war in human history that saw the use of nuclear weapon.
