Electric vehicles are booming. Shortened supply chains, making parts in-house, and advanced battery technologies have significantly helped manufacturers lower the costs of their electric vehicles. Consumers may soon see multiple EVs for sale under $30,000, which is exciting. But let’s forget about all of that promise right now, and visit the other end of the spectrum. What are some of the most expensive electric vehicles on the road ever made on Earth?

List of top 5 most expensive electric cars of all time

1. Aspark OWL

2. Nio EP9

3. Battista Anniversario

4. Lotus Evija

5. Rimac C Two

#1. Aspark OWL

Top 5 Electric Cars - Most Expensive of All Time

The Aspark OWL is incredibly light due to the use of carbon fiber for its bodywork and also has a carbon fiber monocoque chassis weighing 120 kg. It can do 0-60 mph in 1.69 seconds making it the world’s fastest accelerating production car.

Only 50 units of the OWL will be produced for $3,229,200 each and production starts in 2020.The Japanese engineering firm, Aspark in 2018 started a project they hope will produce the world’s fastest accelerating electric car – this resulted in the development of the Aspark OWL (shown above). The Owl got its public unveiling at the November 2019 Dubai International Motor Show.

#2. Nio EP9

Nio was founded in 2014 under the name ‘NextEV’. Its first car was a quad-motor supercar called the EP9. Its four motors produce a total of 1,341hp – not far off what you get in a 1,500hp Bugatti Chiron – and meant it could do 0-60mph in just 2.7 seconds, as cited by Car Wow.

But one of the most interesting things about the EP9 wasn’t to do with its speed or its $3,222,650 price tag; it was to do with recharging. And it’s a feature that comes in all of Nio’s new SUVs and saloons…Nio has invented a way to boost its cars from empty to 100% charged in under 10 minutes using swappable batteries. When you’re running low, you can just drive to a special Nio garage and swap your flat battery for a fully charged one in around three minutes.

Automobili Pininfarina has recently said it plans to produce 150 Battista vehicles to deliver around the globe. Included in those 150 will be five… yes only five, Anniversario edition Battistas. Each Battista Anniversario will offer the same performance, but with custom paint and wheels, reported Electrek.

Each Battista Anniversario is hand-painted in Cambiano through one of the most complex painting processes in the world: the car needs to be disassembled and reassembled three times before it obtains its final stunning livery. The colour scheme is an homage to the Piedmont environment, where Battista “Pinin” Farina worked and lived: Bianco Setriere, Grigio Antonelliano, and of course the Pininfarina signature colour, the Iconica Blu.

When the Battista hits roads sometime this year, it will cost around $2.2 million. The Battista Anniversario however, is going to run you $2.9 million. Remember, there will only be five on Earth… five!

Moving onward but staying in Europe, we have the brand new Evija from Lotus. Evija was first unveiled in 2019 as the first all-electric (and limited) offering from Lotus cars. After its official debut, Lotus began extensive high-speed testing its Evija prototype and made (sound) waves on the track at Goodwood SpeedWeek.

While the Evija is still technically a prototype, its target numbers on Lotus’ website are impressive. The electric sports car is said to offer 2,000 PS (~1973 HP), target a max speed of 200+ mph, and reach a target range of 215 miles. Lotus claims that the Evija will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 3 seconds too. On top of that, at a weight of 1,680 kg (~3,704 lbs), the Evija is expected to be the lightest electric hypercar to ever enter production.

Speaking of production, this will be a limited release from Lotus. The British automaker has previously said it plans to release 130 Evija hypercars. According to Lotus, production is slated to begin sometime before mid-2021. What about price, though? You know we’re getting near the end of our list. Each of the 130 Lotus Evijas should cost around $2.1 million.

With a better powertrain than its predecessor, only 150 units of this car will be built and if you haven’t yet placed an order then it’s too late – it sold out in less than three weeks for $1,977,150 each.

Lucid Motors Air Dream Edition - Most expensive electric vehicles coming soon this year

Lucid Motors’ upcoming Air sedan. Lucid first made major waves in the EV world with its Air prototype challenging Tesla’s Model S Plaid on the track. The American automaker now looks to deliver its first EV, the Air sedan in 2021. The first trim available also happens to be its most expensive – the Air Dream Edition. Lucid Motors’ debut EV will enter the market at a whopping $169,000 before any incentives, or add-ons.

The Air Dream Edition was currently slated to deliver this spring followed by two, less expensive Air trims in 2021. There is also a standard version of the Air called Pure scheduled to debut in 2022. Now, Lucid has pushed the Dream Edition delivery to the second half of 2021. You may be able to experience a Lucid Studio soon to get a closer look too. The automaker is looking to expand its retail presence in the U.S. before the Air starts delivering.
