Outstanding students from developing countries with no other financial resources are eligible to apply for one of a small number of annual scholarships through the Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme.
Scholarships are given out annually in June or July through a competitive application process and are comprised of a 50% grant and 50% loan.
While requests for doctoral programs are less common, the Foundation will consider them if the student can demonstrate that earning a PhD is essential to achieving their professional goals.

9. Edinburgh Global Distance Learning Scholarships

The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), which administers the Small Grants Program for Thesis Writing, holds an annual competition.
Through the funding of primary research carried out by post-graduate students and professionals, the grants are intended to support the development of the social sciences in Africa as well as the ongoing renewal and bolstering of research capacities in African universities.

Research proposal for small grants: The research proposal should be based on a creative problem that demonstrates the theme's originality in relation to ongoing research in the same field. Budget for small grants: Applicants must provide a thorough budget that clearly identifies costs associated with different stages of their research. For PhDs, the budget should not exceed USD 5,000 and for Masters, USD 3000. This grant only covers fieldwork trips within the nation where the research is actually conducted.
