In 1988, Hewlett-Packard achieved a breakthrough with its DeskJet inkjet printer rather than a laser printer. It became a feasible home computer accessory since the company could produce it at a comparatively low cost of production. Nonetheless, the cost was $1,000. An HP DeskJet can now be purchased for $40 or less.

103. First Lithium Batteries - 1970s

Lithium is one of the elements in the periodic table with the greatest electrochemical properties and the lowest weight. M. Stanley Whittingham of Binghamton University originally proposed the concept of the lithium battery in the 1970s while he was employed by Exxon. Because titanium sulfide and lithium metal were not good choices for materials, the design was not practical enough for daily use.

104. First VCR (Videocassette recorders) - 1970

Although the former was based on the latter, videocassette recorders and video tape recorders are two different things. The VCR format was created by Philips in 1970 especially for television stations, but it wasn't until two years later made available to the general public. Video Cassette Recording was Philips' name for it, and people called it "the N1500" (the device's original model).

By 1975, when VCRs became widely available, six well-known companies had made significant contributions to the technology: JVC, RCA, Sony, Matsushita Electric (Panasonic), Toshiba, and AMPEX. The Japanese electronics produced by Sony, JVC, and Matsushita Electric dominated the market among those companies' offerings. Such devices, in the opinion of Motion Pictures of America president Jack Valenti in 1982, were nothing more than barbarism for the motion picture business. However, in 1984, the Supreme Court finally gave VCRs permission to be used for home recording.

105. First Email - 1971

The majority of early mainframe and minicomputer programmers created mail applications that were similar but frequently incompatible. These were eventually connected by a network of routing and gateway systems.

106. First Floppy disk - 1971

Following its 1971 introduction by IBM, the floppy disk underwent further development, going from an eight-inch large size to the final, most advantageous form factor of just 3.5 square inches. The rapid development of portable hard drives and CDs/DVDs has made the actual floppy disk less popular (aside from coasters, perhaps), but its legacy has not entirely disappeared. Electro-Data and the Hamilton Watch Company created the first electronic watch with digital functionality. 109. First Flash Drive - 1981

Fujio Masuoka, the man who invented the flash drive, was meant to be working for Toshiba on DRAMs (Dynamic Random-Access Memory), but instead he developed the idea for flash memory. The outcome was a flash drive that could store 8,192 bytes of data.

In 1981, he and Hisakazu Iizuka filed a patent application for it. But the memory needed a means of being connected to a computer. The answer came from Ajay Bhatt at Intel in 1996 with the introduction of the Universal Serial Bus (USB).
