Snowpierecer is damn close to a perfect movie. It perfectly encapsulates many if not all of the evils of society and the primitive forces that drive human beings, even those who claim themselves to be civilized.

The cinematography is one-of-a-kind owing to the stretched and linear nature of the train itself, forcing the camera and the audience to watch along as the narrative unspools in a side-scrolling manner. The action unfurls in unique and captivating, if gut-wrenching, ways, all the more powerful because of the social struggles that act as the backdrop. It's truly remarkable storytelling, top to bottom and tip to tail. Seek it out sooner than later.
2. Star Trek: The Next Generation

If you’re looking for some classic sci-fi, why not go with something as tried and true as Star Trek? While Netflix does have the original show with Spok and Captain Kirk, The Next Generation holds a special place in our hearts, as cited by The Manual. And with 7 seasons of Captain Picard and the crew exploring the final frontier, there’s plenty of episodes to keep you busy.

Netflix’s beloved series of cautionary tales about the future dangers of emerging technologies, Black Mirror, dabbles somewhat often in romance. Though it dips into the realm of horror and satire, Black Mirror is consistent with one question: What can technology do to us when it’s taken to extremes? This Valentine's Day, why not revisit the superb and award-winning "San Junipero" episode?
According to Inverse, Season 3, Episode 4 is set in a beach resort town called San Junipero, where a shy woman named Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) meets the outgoing Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw). It's the full-on '80s, so everyone's wearing flashy colors and living it up. As they begin to fall in love, cracks in their intimacy begin to emerge just as cracks in the foundation of their reality also show up. I won't spoil the big twist here for those who haven't seen it.

4. Okja

One of the highest-profile movies to hit Netflix but bypass a traditional theatrical rollout was Okja, Bong Joon Ho's follow up to 2013's Snowpiercer, Collider cites. It's an eviscerating takedown of both the modern agricultural industry and the intertwined science of genetic engineering. The story takes science to the extreme and, at times, ridiculous proportions and makes no attempt to portray beneficial real-world achievements in an equal light. However, the moral of the story is hard to miss: Humans who play God soon lose their very humanity.
5. The Witcher

Based on the popular game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, this adventurous series does a good job of filling the void that Game of Thrones left behind. The storyline follows Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) as he travels around fighting vicious monsters, beasts, and of course, the occasional human. Filled with sorcery, war, and the undeniable performance of Cavill and Anya Chalotra, this is one of the best shows you’ll find today. Though be careful watching these episodes too fast, season 2 doesn’t arrive until later in 2021.
6. Love, Death & Robots

Strangely enough, there really isn't much love to be found in Love, Death & Robots. It's a horny series that's occasionally problematic, but there isn't much tenderness to be found here. This animated sci-fi anthology series from Deadpool director Tim Miller was done in collaboration with David Fincher. The episodes vary between five and 15 minutes and use different animation styles to tell stories within the realms of sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and comedy.

7. In the Shadow of the Moon

Jim Mickle's sci-fi crime thriller somehow slipped under the radar this year despite being on Netflix and being a generally engrossing, well-executed science fiction tale. Boyd Holbrook stars as a police officer who stumbles into horrendous series of crimes and winds up locked in the cat-and-mouse change that will define decades of his life... and mix him up in some twisted, tragic time-travel saga that could save the future of the country. An obsessive crime drama that mostly keeps it lowkey despite the extreme stakes, In the Shadow of the Moon has an occasional unfortunate habit of thinking it's more ahead of the audience than it really is, but its still an intriguing, engrossing, and technically well-executed time-travel saga that's well worth digging into.
8. Invisible City

At the intersection of supernatural myths and science fiction is INVISIBLE CITY, a new Netflix original from Carlos Saldanha, Brazilian director behind the Ice Age animated movies and Rio. In it, an environmental police officer discovers the hidden world of mythological entities from Brazilian folklore not long after enduring a personal tragedy ... but could it all be connected?
The series seems steeped in mystery and intrigue, and it just may be tinged with a touch of horror. We don't know a whole lot about it just yet, but it's one to keep an eye on.
9. Midnight Special

If you’re into grounded, indie sci-fi movies you’ll want to check out Midnight Special. This underrated 2016 film takes place in Texas and follows a father (Michael Shannon) who is forced to go on the run with his son (Jaeden Martell) when it turns out his son has special powers.
Chased down by both the government and a cult, the bond between father and son is tested in various ways. Adam Driver plays an NSA communications analyst who has his own vested interest in the boy, and while this sounds like the plot of a superhero movie, Nichols approaches the material in an extremely realistic and grounded manner. It’s a Sundance movie with stunning performances and minimalist visual effects, putting a heavy focus on character over plot twists or giant set pieces. And Shannon gives a deeply soulful turn as the boy’s father.
10. About Time

Sad dad science fiction is a whole mood with movies like The Midnight Sky, Interstellar, A Quiet Place, and even Signs. But if you're looking for something a little more uplifting that involves some fantastical time travel mechanics, then look no further than the utterly charming About Time (2013) starring Domhnall Gleeson as Tim Lake, a young man who — like all the men in his family — can travel through time.
Don't confuse this movie with The Time Traveler's Wife (2009), in which Rachel McAdams also plays the love interest to a male time traveler. Tim uses his powers in predictably amusing and occasionally cringy ways, but the ultimate message about valuing the time we get to spend with those we love remains as potent as ever.
11. Inception

A star-studded cast including Leonardo DiCaprio takes us through a mind-bending heist movie that explores the nature of consciousness in compelling ways.
If you're already a fan of sci-fi, then chances are you've already seen this seminal classic that's both a rock-solid heist movie and a compelling, cerebral bit of science fiction. But if you need a palate cleanser after the purposefully obtuse Tenet, then Inception may be the perfect thing to watch.

A ragtag group of misfits who forage for junk in outer space accidentally discover a young girl who turns out to be some kind of android superweapon. Do they sell her off to the highest bidder to finally have enough money to live comfortably? Or do they contend with all the nefarious forces and protect their new friend with their lives?
