Military uniforms are designed to be practical and functional, but some have stood out over the years for their unusual designs and appearances.

Here are some of the weirdest military uniforms in the world, ranked by Knowinsiders.com.

1. French Foreign Legion Pioneers

The French Foreign Legion is perhaps best known in terms of military dress for the white kepi headdress worn by Legionnaires on ceremonial occasions.

Members of the French Foreign Legion, however, wear a green beret when not on parade.

The French Foreign Legion is a military service branch of the French Army and was established in 1831. Its roles include Airborne Infantry, Light Infantry, Armoured Infantry, Cavalry, and Engineers, totaling nearly 9,000 men.

This engineering unit functions similarly to America's sappers, clearing the way through enemy obstacles so that other forces can attack from behind. The pioneers wear large leather aprons and carry ceremonial axes in their dress uniforms.

2. The Swiss Guard

The task of safeguarding the Pope falls upon these soldiers. The uniform is appealing because of its traditional Medici blue, red and yellow, along with the white collar and gloves. Jules Repond designed this uniform in 1914. Pope Francis acknowledges that every uniform represents a real person with a family, a homeland, personality, sensibility, and goals in life.

3. Carabiniers du Prince

The infantry division of the Force Publique, called the Carabiniers du Prince, translates to "Prince's Riflemen" and is responsible for protecting the Crown Prince, Prince Albert, and his royal palace in Monaco. The force was established in 1817 by then Crown Prince Honore IV and consists of just 119 specialized close-protection personnel.

During winter parades, members of the Carabiniers du Prince wear a dark blue tunic and light blue trousers, while a less flashy dress code with a white shirt and helmet is worn in the summer. The force is tasked with the protection of the Crown Prince and his family, who rule over the 38,600 people living in Monaco.

4. The Special Guard Of Honor Company

This ceremonial unit, also known as the Mongolian State Honor Guard, was established in 1955 as part of the People's Army of the Mongolian People's Republic.

If you want to join the Honor Guard, you must be tall. The minimum height requirement is 5 ft 11 in... So, for the most part, we can avoid this one.

The Honor Guard's uniforms are modeled after those worn by Genghis Khan's Mongol Empire in the 13th century, and they are brightly colored in red and blue.

The Honor Guard is permitted to carry the conspicuous Ceremonial Tug, a 10 ft tall pole with Yak hairs circularly arranged on its top, on state occasions.

5. India Border Security Force

This young force, formed in response to the State Armed Police's failure to prevent Pakistani incursions during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, has grown from a few battalions to over 186 battalions in its 50 years. Many visitors are surprised by the headdress, but it is a common uniform item in the Indian military. Different colors and patterns of headdress, like the berets worn by the US military, indicate different units.

7. South Korean Royal Guard

In 1996, the guards at South Korea's main palace, Gyeongbokgung, reenacted the ancient practice of changing the guard. Because the display was well-received, the guard unit protecting the palace has continued to perform the ceremony for tourists ever since, wearing traditional clothing and carrying traditional weapons throughout the ceremony and their guard shift.

The de-facto military of the small state of Vatican City, the Swiss Guard provides security for the Holy See guarding both the Pope and his papal palace.

Its proper name is the Pontifical Swiss Guard and it has been active for over 500 years.

The Swiss Guard is made up of a small outfit of infantry soldiers, totalling the grand number of 135 and its ceremonial chief if Pope Francis himself.

10. Italian Carabinieri

The "Arm of carabineers" is a national military police force in Italy. Initially, this police force was in charge of protecting the Kingdom of Sardinia. King Victor Emmanuel I of Savoy established it. They were in charge of overcoming opposition.
