Although Fort McMurray is most famous as an Alberta Oil Sands city, as well as for the devastating forest fires of 2016 that caused the entire city to be evacuated, there is so much more to this northern Alberta city.
Whether you enjoy the outdoors and nature with a walk down Birchwood Trails, or a great round of golf at Miskanaw Golf Club, or if you prefer indoor entertainment at places like Points North Gallery, Aim High Park, or Mr. E’s Solve-It-Tutorium, Fort McMurray will have you bustling from sunup to sundown.
AND when the night falls, head out of town to catch Northern Lights, the mesmerizing displays of light that appear in the nighttime northern skies, usually during clear evenings from October to March.

Old Town Yellowknife is the part of the city where a majority of art galleries such as the Frozen Rock Studio, Down to Earth Gallery, and Gallery of the Midnight Sun are located. But a visit here isn’t complete without stopping at one of our favorite restaurants in Yellowknife, The Wildcat Cafe. While the Wildcat Cafe might not look like much from the outside, the inside is oozing with history and stories.
Get a reservation beforehand, the lines can be long. While you’re at the Wildcat Cafe make sure you pick up a marker and sign your name on the walls. Or better yet, look for our card! We’ve already gotten calls from people who have found it there!
Old Town also houses some of the best restaurants in Yellowknife such as the Wildcat cafe. As well, Old Town is the home of the popular local brewery, NWT Brewing. With names like Ragged Ass Rd. It’s clear that Yellowknife’s vibrant history is still on full display here! It’s definitely one of the most amazing places in Canada.
4. Bonnyville, Alberta

Bonnyville is a town arranged in east-focal Alberta between Cold Lake and St. Paul. The encompassing Municipal District MD of Bonnyville No. 87's metropolitan office is situated in Bonnyville. North York, former city (1979–98), southeastern Ontario, Canada. The area was first inhabited by native tribes — most notably the Dane-zaa, Cree and Iroquois peoples who came into contact with European traders and started selling pelts and furs to them. By 1909, a land rush was in full force, making the city grow considerably. As such, the town of Grande Prairie was formed by 1912. The area is popular for those who love outdoor sports as there is plenty of room for outdoor activities here no matter what time of the year it is. But if that’s not your thing, Grande Prairie has a surprising number of festivals and events that go on annually.
Whether you are going on your first date or celebrating a special event, there are plenty of options to make your date a memorable one at Grande Prairie. Have a relaxing spa day at The Vine Luxury Spa, followed by dinner at the romantic Acropolis Greek Restaurant and Pub. Then, catch the latest concert at Revolution Place, and finish the night off dancing to the live DJ at the Shark Club. During the day you’ll want to take advantage of all the outdoor activities in and around Burlington. Taking a bike ride on the Burlington Bike Path/Island Line Trail is an excellent way to spend an afternoon. You’ll pass several beaches and other spots where you can take a dip or have a picnic. Another great spot to explore just off the bike path is Lone Rock Point – a wooded peninsula that juts out into Lake Champlain. It has some beautiful, secluded picnic spots perched on top of cliffs with spectacular views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks.
Another great option for couples exploring this area is to rent kayaks or stand-up paddleboards from North Beach. From there, you can paddle out and around the Lone Rock peninsula.
If you’re really feeling adventurous, you can bike the roughly 14 miles to Snow Farm Vineyard and Winery on Lake Champlain’s Grand Isle (alternatively you can just drive there). The vineyard offers tastings of its wines, including Pinot Noir and Riesling. It also hosts free concerts on Thursday evenings in the summer and Friday evenings in the winter.
In the evening, there’s no better place to take in the sunset than out on the water. Buy a ticket for the Spirit of Ethan Allen’s sunset cruise – a two-hour tour that departs from the Burlington waterfront area. If you’d rather keep your feet on dry land, take an evening stroll along the boardwalk at the Lake Champlain Waterfront. If you keep going on the bike path for a mile or so you’ll hit Texaco beach – an undeveloped stretch of sand that’s a great spot for watching the sunset, stargazing, or maybe even taking a nighttime dip.
