Going out and socialising is fun and all, but let’s be honest, sometimes you can’t beat getting stuck into a gripping new TV show. There are lots of UK's TV dramas that attract millions of views. Check out top 10 most-watched TV in the UK of the year 2022.
1. The Tourist (BBC1) – 11.4 million viewers
The most watched drama of 2022 was The Tourist, the BBC has revealed.
The thriller series stars Jamie Dornan as a car crash victim in the Australian outback who wakes up with no memory. Described as "character driven", the six-part drama follows "a British man who finds himself in the glowing red heart of the Australian outback, being pursued by a vast tank truck trying to drive him off the road."
The BBC's synopsis continues: "An epic cat and mouse chase unfolds and the man later wakes in hospital, hurt, but somehow alive. Except he has no idea who he is.
"With merciless figures from his past pursuing him, The Man’s search for answers propels him through the vast and unforgiving outback."
2. Trigger Point (ITV1) – 10.9 million viewers
In second place was the hit ITV drama Trigger Point, starring Vicky McClure (pictured) as explosives operator Lana Washington. The series focuses on Expo officials who risk their lives daily on ‘the long walk’ into danger and has been praised by viewers.
3. The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe (ITV1) – 10.1 million viewers

It's the story you wouldn't believe was true if you didn't watch it play out on the news every day. Back in 2002, John Darwin from Hartlepool staged his own death by pretending to be killed at sea while out in his canoe in order to claim much-needed money from life insurance to pay his extortionate debts
The only person who knew he was really alive was his wife, Anne Darwin. After years of hiding in plain sight (literally next door), John decided enough was enough and he would move to Panama to live a long and happy life with his wife, even taking snaps with the estate agent who was hooking them up with property over there.
The great unravelling came when John discovered he couldn't truly live and work in Panama due to a change in visas which would mean he'd have to produce a real birth certificate, which of course, he didn't have.

4. The Responder (BBC1) – 9.5 million viewers
Martin Freeman takes the lead role as Chris Carson, whose mental health has been driven into the ground over many thankless years in the force, which in turn is causing his marriage to deteriorate. What begins as a fascinating character study explodes into a thrilling crime saga when desperate young addict Casey (Emily Fairn) steals a huge stash of cocaine, with the intention of selling it on and using the funds to start over. Torn between two worlds, Chris finds himself constantly questioning what is right, a matter further complicated when he finds himself paired up with idealistic rookie Rachel (Adelayo Adedayo).
5. Death in Paradise (BBC1) – 9.1 million viewers

Death in Paradise got its first-ever seasonal special at 2021 Christmas and it was such a success the BBC has ordered another.
BBC teases about the plot: "Christmas in Saint Marie takes a spooky turn this year when an old case of Selwyn’s comes back to haunt him following the murder of a true crime podcaster on the hunt for a missing child. Marlon is forced to spend the night in a haunted house and Darlene takes a hard look at her life choices."
Ralf Little is back as DI Neville Parker. Also returning is Shantol Jackson as DS Naomi Thomas, Tahj Miles as Officer Marlon Pryce, Elizabeth Bourgine as Catherine and Don Warrington as Commissioner Selwyn Patterson.
Guest stars include Les Dennis (Coronation Street) and Siobhan McSweeney (Derry Girls). Plus Sophie Edge as Neville's love interest.
6. SAS Rogue Heroes (BBC1) – 9 million viewers
The TV series begins in Cairo, 1941, when David Stirling (Connor Swindells) - an eccentric young officer, creates a radical plan that flies in the face of all accepted rules of modern warfare. He builds a team of the "toughest, boldest and brightest soldiers" with the intention of causing mayhem behind enemy lines.
This is dubbed “One of the most expensive TV shows made for UK television at the time of transmission”.
7. Call the Midwife (BBC1) – 8.7 million viewers
The story follows 22-year-old Jenny, who in 1957 leaves her comfortable home to become a midwife in London's East End. She is surprised to find that she will be living in a convent: Nonnatus House. Working alongside fellow nurses and the medically-trained nuns, Jenny has her eyes opened to the harsh living conditions of the slums, but she also discovers the warm hearts and the bravery of the mothers. Even after Jenny leaves Nonnatus, she continues to chronicle the lives of the midwives who have become her family.

8. Sherwood (BBC1) – 8.6 million viewers

Sherwood is a BBC One drama boasting an all-star cast including David Morrissey, Lesley Manville and Downton Abbey favorite Joanne Froggatt and it's available to watch in full on BBC iPlayer.
Sherwood focuses on powerful social and political themes that resonate throughout modern British society as two appalling and unexpected murders cause a huge impact on an already broken community, leading to a huge manhunt.
9. Silent Witness (BBC1) – 8.2 million viewers
Silent Witness is a British crime drama television series produced by the BBC, which focuses on a team of forensic pathology experts and their investigations into various crimes. First broadcast in 1996, the series was created by Nigel McCrery, a former murder squad detective based in Nottingham. Twenty-five series of Silent Witness have been broadcast since 1996.
Amanda Burton starred as primary character Dr. Sam Ryan before leaving the show during the eighth series. Since her departure the series has featured an ensemble cast, which initially consisted of William Gaminara, Tom Ward and Emilia Fox, and later on David Caves, Liz Carr and Richard Lintern alongside Emilia Fox. At the end of series 23 Carr and Lintern both departed. The cast was joined by Genesis Lynea from series 24.
The programme is broadcast in more than 235 territories, including ABC in Australia, Showcase and the Knowledge Network in Canada, KRO in the Netherlands, TV One and Prime in New Zealand, BBC First in South Africa and BBC America in the United States. Silent Witness continues to achieve good audience ratings in the UK. In 2011, for example, Series 14 attracted an average audience of nine million viewers
10. Out House (ITV1) – 8 million viewers

The four-part thriller starring Martin Compston and Tuppence Middleton is an adaptation of the international best-selling book by Louise Candlish.
