Like its Northern Hemisphere counterpart (Aurora Borealis), the Southern Lights (Aurora Australis) illuminate the night sky with flickering shades of green, blue, purple and red. The Southern Lights can be viewed all year round – although most commonly during winter, May to August, and during the spring equinox in September. Aurora Australis is visible from several spots across the country, but your best chance of witnessing this phenomenon is from Australia’s southernmost state – Tasmania. Head to Bruny Island, Satellite Island, Bathurst Harbour and Cradle Mountain for the beautiful low-light conditions you need to spot the glimmering light show.

During the months of September and October, the rare meteorological phenomenon referred to as the ‘Morning Glory Clouds’ roll across the Gulf and can be observed above the skies in Burketown. Gangalidda traditional owner Murrandoo Yanner said his people believe the morning glory was created by Walalu, the Rainbow Serpent, and is of great cultural significance. The cloud bank can be up to 1,000km long, 1-2km wide and can travel at speeds of up to 60km/hour. Although these clouds can be found in other parts of the world, Burketown is the only place where they appear frequently at set times of the year.

One of the best natural wonders in Australia is Kings Canyon in the Northern Territory — a majestic land of 100m tall sandstone walls that tower over the desert. The spectacular area is also home to walking trails, 4WD tracks, a 6km Rim Walk and an array of accommodation options such as campsites and resorts.

Visit the Lost City and the Garden of Eden for a trip into the ancient world. It's a must to stop here when driving Alice Springs to Uluru.

The Twelve Apostles are limestone stacks created by erosion. You can see them from the Great Ocean Road, a popular road trip from Melbourne to Adelaide (or vice versa).

Despite the name, there are actually only nine “apostles.” Today, they continue to erode from their base at a rate of two centimeters a year.

9. Hanging Rock

Also known as Mount Diogenes, the extraordinary rock formation protrudes 718 meters above sea level. Hanging Rock is formed from volcanic activity and is about 6.25 million years old. It was an important male initiation site of the Wurundjeri people.

Today the site still offers a great day out and provides wonderful views. It takes only 40 minutes to hike to the summit. From the top a scenic panorama of Macedon Ranges opens. The Rock also features a picnic and a barbeque area as well as a cafe and a race course, since it has a long tradition of horse races.

10. MacKenzie Falls

Found in Grampians National Park, which is proud of its numerous cascading waterfalls, MacKenzie Falls is one of the most favorite and popular attractions. Its powerful stream plunges 35 m (115 ft) down the ancient rock formations all year round, unlike most of the other falls in the park. The waterfall is one of the most photographed landmarks in the area. But besides being a real treat to your eyes and lens, MacKenzie Falls offers the most exhilarating swim.

The natural wonder leaves an unforgettable impression partially because it is surrounded with a rather arid and brown environment. But Lake Wartook and MacKenzie River ensure its constant flow.
