Machu Picchu, an Inca citadel from the 15th century, is situated in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru on a 7,970 foot mountain ridge. It is the most recognizable representation of Inca culture and is frequently mistaken for the "Lost City of the Incas." The majority of archaeologists concur that it was built around 1450 as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti and abandoned a century later, during the time of the Spanish conquest.
It was unknown to the Spanish, and American historian Hiram Bingham first brought it to the attention of the world in 1911. Machu Picchu, a city with walls made of polished dry stone, was designated as a Peruvian Historic Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
