The national average gas price hit more than $4.8 per gallon in June. But some states are being hit harder by gas prices than others. In California, for example, a gallon of gas at some stations now costs more than the federal minimum wage of $7.25.
Fortunately, California’s minimum wage is nearly double that of the federal minimum. Entry level hourly workers in California earn at least $14 an hour. But that $14 isn’t going as far as it used to when it comes to filling their gas tanks, either.

GasBuddy’s Patrick De Haan told CBS News that nine gas stations in California charge more than $7.25 per gallon. These stations are Chevron, Mobil, Shell and one Valero in the cities of Los Angeles, Lee Vining, Bridgeport, Menlo Park and Shoshone. The Chevron at 901 N. Alameda Street in Los Angeles boasts the dubious distinction of the highest gas price in the country, with regular unleaded going for $8.05 per gallon.
Why Is Gas in California So Expensive?
The average price in California right now is $6.16, which is currently the highest in the country. California residents pay higher taxes on gas than those in other states, which goes toward infrastructure, sustainability and other costs.
But the state also suffers from what University of California economist Severin Borenstein dubbed the “mystery gasoline surcharge.” California has high property taxes, land is expensive, and the cost-of-living there is 39% higher than the average U.S. city, according to data published by RentCafe.com from the 2021 Cost-of-Living Index.
While these factors all contribute to more expensive gas, Borenstein has asserted unidentifiable factors also drive costs up in California. Branded stations, like those on the list of the priciest stations, can charge a premium — and in California, that premium seems to be higher than in other states.
Record Gas Prices For So Long ‘Unprecendented’
Gas prices in the United States continued to soar over the Memorial Day holiday as the average price for a gallon of gasoline in the U.S. rose to a record on Sunday at $4.61.
Drivers were paying $3.04 for a gallon of gas on average a year ago at this time.
The Biden administration has faced mounting criticism over the rise in gas prices since the president took office and has maintained that Russia’s war in Ukraine is a leading contributor to the crisis despite gas prices rising before the country’s invasion earlier this year.
"Here’s the situation. And when it comes to the gas prices, we’re going through an incredible transition that is taking place that, God willing, when it’s over, we’ll be stronger and the world will be stronger and less reliant on fossil fuels when this is over," Biden said during a press conference last week.
"And what I’ve been able to do to keep it from getting even worse — and it’s bad," Biden added. "The price of gas at the pump is something that I told you — you heard me say before — it would be a matter of great discussion at my kitchen table when I was a kid growing up. It’s affecting a lot of families."
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.

76 (formerly Union 76) is a chain of gas stations located within the United States. The 76 brand is owned by Phillips 66. Unocal, the original owner and creator of the 76 brand, merged with Chevron Corporation in 2005.
The Union Oil Company of California (later known as Unocal) introduced the Union 76 brand to their existing Union Oil service stations in 1932. After expanding along the West Coast, the Union 76 brand expanded to the Midwest and Southeast through the acquisition of Pure Oil in 1965.
In 1989, Unocal began to gradually exit the Midwest and Eastern markets by forming a joint venture with PDVSA, called Uno-Ven, in which Unocal contributed its Midwest refining and marketing assets. Unocal sold its interest in Uno-Ven to PDVSA in 1997 and PDVSA rebranded the Midwestern and Eastern Union 76 stations to its Citgo brand.
In 1997, Unocal also sold its remaining refining and marketing operations in the western United States and the rights to the Union 76 brand for use in refining and marketing operations to Tosco. Four years later, Phillips Petroleum purchased Tosco along with the 76 brand in 2001. Phillips merged with Conoco the following year to form ConocoPhillips.

In 2016, Saudi Aramco-owned Motiva Enterprises signed a deal with Phillips 66 Company which would allow Motiva to use the 76 brand on some of its stations in its 26 eastern and Gulf Coast states operating territory. By 2017, the 76 brand was reintroduced into New York, Georgia, Texas, Tennessee and New Jersey.

Thousand Oaks is the second-largest city in Ventura County, California, United States. On January 11, 2018, Sam’s Club announced the permanent closure of select stores. In a number of cases, employees showed up to work and found the doors locked and a notice saying that the store would soon be liquidated. Walmart eventually told Business Insider that 63 Sam’s Club stores would begin liquidating across the country, including in Alaska, Arizona, California, Illinois, New York, Ohio, and Texas.
According to Business Insider, the Sam's Club closings and plans to convert some stores into e-commerce fulfillment centers as announced in January 2018 are part of Walmart's growing commitment to online retailing that will allow it to better compete with rival Amazon.

Adelanto (Spanish for "Advance") is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. It is approximately 9 miles (14 km) northwest of Victorville in the Victor Valley area of the Mojave Desert, in the northern region of the Inland Empire. The population was 31,765 at the 2010 census.
Historically Adelanto was a fruit-growing town. Prior to 1992, much of the economy was related to the George Air Force Base. After its closure the city began having economic difficulties. The openings of several area prisons began in 1991, and the city government approved the construction of two private prisons. The prisons were not required to hire people within the Adelanto city limits. The city, as of 2016, collects $160,000 annually in total from the prisons within the city limits. That year Jimi Devine of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote that the prisons "had mixed effects on the community for 25 years." Matt Tinoco of Vice wrote that "the prisons have failed to stimulate lasting growth in Adelanto" and that "all ultimately ended up contributing little to the city's coffers." Tinoco further stated that Adelanto had an "image as one big jail."
The privately owned Adelanto Detention Center, run by the GEO Group to house immigrant detainees, was built in Adelanto in 1991 as a state prison. In 2014, when a private developer proposed another prison, the city council approved a development agreement with the private developer that under California subdivision law allows the city to negotiate terms to provide additional benefits to the city. The city had little latitude to deny the private project as the land was appropriately zoned for use as a prison.
The city has only a few retail stores and restaurants. A bed tax contributes about $200,000 annually from the detention facilities. The small city has struggled as tax revenue fell far short of the city budget. In 2013, they closed a fire station and laid off a quarter of the town's staff. Residents though turned down a nearly 8% utility users tax in November 2013.
