Top 10 Most Popular Toilet Paper Brands in the UK
Where is toilet paper made in the UK |
Around 1.25 million tonnes of hygiene paper were used in the UK, with more than half of that quantity being toilet paper and the remainder being hand, facial, industrial, and sanitary tissues.
Seventeen tissue mills in the UK produced about 60% of this tissue, and the remaining 40% was imported.
The majority of international trade is in the form of multi-tonne parent reels that are prepared to be converted into shelf-ready rolls and packs closer to the end market due to the light weight and bulk of the shelf-ready product. Either separate facilities or paper mills can perform this conversion.
Typically, virgin or recycled sustainable wood fibers are used to make tissue. The majority of recycled fibers come from the UK or neighboring European nations.
Paper tissue typically consists of a mixture of fibers, primarily conifer and eucalyptus from European, North American, or South American plantations.

90 pence per week on average was spent by households on toilet paper. A little bit more than this amount, at one British pound per week, was spent by households with a reference person who was between the ages of 30 and 64.
The average amount spent on toilet paper by households in the top 10% of income earners each week is 1 British pound and 20 pence. Households with higher average incomes were also more likely to spend more on toilet paper each week. Only 50 pence a week on toilet paper was likely to be spent by households in the bottom ten percent.
The value of toilet paper manufacturer sales was 1.05 billion British pounds.
1. Andrex
Andrex |
A British toilet paper brand is called Andrex. The American business Kimberly-Clark is the owner. The brand is known as the "Andrex Puppy," a Labrador Retriever puppy that frequently appears in the company's television commercials.
Along with the brands Scott, Kleenex, and Scotties, Kimberly-Clark also uses the Andrex brand in the Hong Kong market with products from their Taiwanese factories (though wet wipes are imported from South Korea).
Kleenex Cottonelle is its sibling brand in the United States and Australia. It is known as "Hakle" in Austria and "Cottonelle" in Germany. Page is the name of Andrex in the Netherlands. It bears the Scottex name in Belgium, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. It bears the Baby Soft brand in South Africa.
The puppy is referred to as the "Kleenex Puppy" in Australia, and Kleenex is a collaborator and supporter of Guide Dogs Australia.
St Andrew Mills Ltd., a paper manufacturer, first created Andrex in 1942 as a throwaway handkerchief. The handkerchiefs were only offered for sale at the London department store Harrods. Brands like Bronco and Izal produced harsher products before Andrex. They were commonly marketed as "shinies" and sold by chemists.
The toilet paper was first produced at St Andrew Mill in Walthamstow, which bears the name Andrex. According to Ronald Keith Kent, who came up with the name Andrex, the idea for two-ply luxury paper was inspired by the facial tissues used by American women. The first two-ply tissue was that one.
Bowater acquired St Andrew Mills in 1955, and in 1956 the company established Bowater-Scott, a joint venture with the Scott Paper Company that specialized in tissue products like Andrex.
In the UK, one of the most well-known TV commercials almost never happened. In the original plan from 1972, a girl would dash through a house while dragging a roll of Andrex. This was not approved by the television regulators because they believed it encouraged children to be wasteful. Instead, Raymond Dinkin, the marketing director for Bowater-Scott, chose to use a Labrador puppy. Since then, the puppy has appeared in 130 different commercials.
Bowater sold Bowater-Scott to Scott Paper in 1986, and Kimberly-Clark bought Scott Paper in 1995.
According to Andrex, the first moist toilet paper was marketed in 1992.
Andrex changed its marketing tagline from "Soft, Strong and very very Long" in 2004 to "Tuggable, Huggable Softness" in 2008, and then to "Be Kind To Your Behind" in 2009. The phrases "Andrex clean" and "How Andrex do you feel?" were being used by 2015.

In conclusion, presto toilet paper works well in small paper holders. If the size of your toilet paper holder isn't too big, you should pick it. As a result, Presto 308-Sheet Mega Roll Toilet Paper is currently the most popular option on the market, despite having fewer sheets.
6. Cusheen Quilted Luxury
Although choosing the right type of paper can be a little challenging, there are some characteristics that set different brands apart. For instance, this Cusheen quilted paper has a faint but discernible scent that is not overpowering.
This particular package includes 60 rolls, which is now the industry standard. People with sensitive skin will undoubtedly appreciate how soft and tender the sheets are due to their 3-ply construction. Although the rolls appear to be quite thick, we were shocked to learn that each roll only contains 155 sheets. However, since each 3-layer sheet in each roll can absorb more liquid than a typical 2-ply toilet roll, it is hardly noticeable.
Now that we have these requirements out of the way, let's talk about how clean your bathroom is. Lavender is used to scent every roll from Cusheen, but even though the scent is not overpowering, some people might still find it a little much. Therefore, lemon and aloe vera scents are also optionally available if you're not a huge fan of lavender.
Finally, these rolls may be the softest toilet paper you can find if you're looking for something useful and pleasant to the touch.
7. Gentille Quilted 3 Ply White
Contrary to premium-grade paper, the quality of affordable products' rolls is typically hit or miss. We were fortunate enough to come across these 3-layer Gentille rolls, which are not your typical stack of paper sheets.
To begin with, despite their affordable price, these rolls are quite thick because they are made of premium quilted paper sheets. Given that the water absorption rates are extremely high, this toilet paper is not just for use in bathrooms. If you happen to make a mess, these rolls will take care of it because this paper, which can be used for anything from paper towels to napkins, makes cleaning much easier.
This product's texture could be a little bit softer than it is, but that is the only thing we didn't like about it. However, aside from that, there isn't much that stands out as being bad.
The quilted 3-ply toilet paper from Gentille will ultimately be a great choice for those who want to get the most for their money. It is the best product in its specific price range because it is reasonably priced and has almost all of the features of more expensive bathroom paper rolls, including high water absorption, softness, and thickness.
8. Freedom 3Ply
This Freedom package will be ideal for you if you prioritize quantity. This durable set of bathroom tissues comes with 45 rolls of 3-layer paper, so it will be a while before you need to place another order.
With the quantity out of the way, let's talk about the paper's actual quality. Although each sheet is thick due to the 3-ply construction, the quilted surface of the pieces is quite pleasant to the touch, and while we cannot claim that it is the softest paper available, it is soft enough for bathroom use.
Additionally, the sheets' thick construction greatly aids in absorbing water and other liquids. In fact, these bathroom tissues can easily compete with some of the higher-quality brands when it comes to cleaning wet messes because their absorption rates are so high. However, the fact that these rolls are fragranced with a scent that might be a little too potent for some users may be off-putting. On the other hand, this won't be a big deal unless you place them close to your bed.
Overall, this pack will be useful for users who require a sizable quantity of paper rolls that can serve as both regular tissues and standard toilet paper.
9. Scottex 96 Rolls
Not 50, not 70, but 96 rolls of paper are included in this package, and aside from their intended use, they can be used pretty much anywhere in the house.
The thickness of this paper is the first thing to note. The main pack contains a lot of rolls, but each roll has 200 sheets, which is a lot given that the sheets are, once more, quite thick. Each sheet is made of three layers of paper, making them all supple and pleasant to the touch.
We believe that this paper's water absorption rate could be improved. Although the absorption rate does not really matter when it comes to toilet paper, it does make the paper more difficult to flush, so it is not advised to just dump a lot of it in at once.
On the plus side, this pile of toilet rolls is fairly universal due to their thick sheets and soft overall surface, so you won't need to use the plunger as long as you don't forget to properly dispose of them.
All things considered, this Scottex package may be the best value you can find if you're looking for reasonably priced bathroom tissues that can be used pretty much anywhere in the house.
10. Scottonelle Soft and Quilted
One of the most delicate bathroom tissue packs available is the soft and quilted toilet paper from Scottonelle. But does that mean it's a useful bathroom-only product? Let's look and see what we can learn.
The fact that Scottonelle has an FSC logo, in contrast to most other paper brands, indicates that the paper's raw materials came from FSC-certified forests. The paper brand's products have also undergone dermatological testing, so it is extremely unlikely that using them will result in any allergic reactions.
Regarding the characteristics of the paper itself, every sheet of this premium brand has a quilted pattern. Considering that each roll has 200 sheets, you should have more than enough to satisfy your family's needs for at least 5 to 6 days before you need to hang up another roll on the toilet paper holder. By choosing it, you will get enough paper to last for quite a while because this bulk package comes with 84 rolls.
In conclusion, this package from Scottonelle is unquestionably the best toilet paper you can find if you're looking for a high-quality item. Its use is not restricted to the bathroom because it is soft and pleasant to the touch and can be used as paper towels and regular paper napkins throughout the house.
The tissue industry in UK may be divided into three segments
Photo: Getty Images |
1. Manufacturers of parent reels of tissue from fibrous raw materials ready for conversion (‘Integrated tissue’)
2. Converters of tissue parent reels either manufactured in the UK or imported from abroad (‘Converted tissue’)
3. Importers of finished tissue products (‘Imported tissue’).
1. Integrated Tissue
560 kTonnes of the 762 kTonnes of tissue parent reels that are produced in the UK are used to make toilet paper.
These reels are produced using 379 kTonnes of recycled paper and 550 kTonnes of imported wood pulp.
The origin of the woodpulps imported by manufacturers of tissue parent reels in particular is unknown, but the paper and board industry as a whole uses just over 1 million tonnes of woodpulp, including 800,000 tonnes of imported woodpulp, 60% of which comes from the EU. There is no reason to think that the tissue industry is an exception to this ratio.
758 kTonnes (99%) of the 762 kTonnes of parent reels produced in the UK are converted there, and the remaining 1% are exported for conversion abroad.
The integrated tissue industry in the UK is composed of six companies running 25 locations, 17 of which are paper mills producing parent reels of tissue.
2. Converted Tissue
741 kTonnes of the 1,067 kTonnes of parent reels that UK tissue converters use are for toilet paper.
This will produce about 960,000 tonnes of tissue products, assuming conversion losses of 10%.
Eight integrated sites (converter on the same site as the paper mill), eight additional standalone converters run by the integrated companies, and an undetermined number of independent converters make up the UK's tissue converter industry.
3. Imported Tissue
The UK imports 405 kTonnes of finished tissue products and exports 112 kTonnes giving a net import of 293 kTonnes. Of this, 258 net kTonnes (88 per cent) was imported from the EU.
