How Many Hospitals in Australia?
Hospitals provide care to a large number of Australians annually, and they are an important component of the nation's healthcare system. Patients who are not admitted (for "elective" treatment or non-emergency purposes) as well as those who are admitted receive care (via emergency rooms and outpatient clinics).
This study provides an overview of national data regarding Australian hospitals and the services they provide.
In Australia, hospitals that are public or private provide medical care. State and territory governments own and run the majority of public hospitals, with funding provided by the Australian government. Private hospitals are owned and run by private for-profit and not-for-profit companies that are supported by patient fees, which are typically subsidized by a combination of government and private health insurance payments.
A day in the life of Australian hospitals-$246 million is spent on public and private hospital services -175,000 nurses and 52,000 doctors were employed in public hospitals -There were 32,400 hospitalisations in public and private hospitals -24,100 people presented for care at Australia’s public hospital emergency departments -128,000 services were provided to non-admitted patients -There were 1,700 admissions to public hospitals from elective surgery waiting lists -2 out of 3 elective surgeries were performed in private hospitals -A hospital acquired complication occurred in 407 hospitalisations -4 cases of Staphylococcus aureus blood stream infection were detected in public hospitals |

I was admitted to the emergency room late one night last week after work due to acute gastritis and underlying conditions. I had to wait a while before the doctors and nurses came to check on me. When I explained that this was a monthly occurrence, they got right to work and didn't waste any time. The staff at the short-term care facility wasted no time in performing a battery of diagnostic tests on the patient, including a complete blood count, urine analysis, X-rays, ultrasound, and round-the-clock monitoring. The hospital was clean, well-kept, and ran smoothly thanks to its competent and courteous staff. This city's public hospital is one of the best I've seen. If you need immediate medical attention, I suggest going to Alfred Hospital. |
Massive hospital, more professional looking compared to most hospitals that i've been too, doctors & nurses are quite good and their cafe is absolutely lovely as well their wards are also kept neat and tidy, and the atmosphere is a bit more serious |

Visitors' comments:
The new RAH is brilliant. Well thought out & designed so each Dept has separate air conditioning & is quite autonomous. This makes you feel safer when you are in a particular Dept, knowing you are not anywhere near Covid patients for example. Staff are constantly using hand sanitiser between patients & they wear masks all the time. Patients are required to wear masks as well of course. You are required to have a RAT test before being treated in the Dept where I attend, & I assume this is hospital policy throughout the whole hospital. I feel secure there, as a day patient for monthly Infusions. |
