Why your hands look old?
Ever wonder what causes aging hands? The answer is found in the way your body changes as a whole over time. But you can intervene in how it happens.
“Dry, scaly skin, brittle nails, and dark age spots can become problems as people get older,” says dermatologist Amy Kassouf, MD.
As you age, your hands lose fat and elasticity and your skin loses volume. This reduced volume and decreased elasticity produces translucent skin that wrinkles and develops age spots.
Age spots, also called liver spots or solar lentigines, happen after exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light and can be various shades of brown or black. They appear on the areas most exposed to the sun, when melanin is abundant because of sun exposure. You can get them at any age, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors or use tanning beds (which are never recommended).
“Your hands can also develop a skeletal appearance because you lose fat in some places as you age,” Dr. Kassouf says. |
9 tips to keep your hands looking young
1. Moisturize
Keeping hands hydrated is the key to counteracting crepey skin. Apply lotions or creams frequently throughout the day. This will help your skin retain its elasticity.
2. Exfoliate
“Dry skin is dead skin,” Dr. Michelow says. He recommends using a simple mixture of lemon and sugar to exfoliate and tone your skin. Follow up with a lanolin cream.
Try using an enriched, oil-based scrub. Your skin’s elasticity may be getting loose and a good exfoliation can help restore some silky smoothness. A homemade scrub can do the trick just the same. Combine 1/4 tsp of olive oil and sugar and rub into your skin. Olive oil is full of omega-3 fatty acids which is a potent moisturizer. The sugar will exfoliate by removing dead, old skin cells to reveal younger skin.
3. Work with the skin’s layers
You can schedule periodic treatments to remove the outer layer of skin. These include dermablading, dermabrasion, chemical exfoliation and laser resurfacing.
4. Soak your hands for increased softness

During the winter, it’s common for people to get cracked, dry, rough skin. To prevent this, soaking your hands in lukewarm water and Epsom salts may benefit and relax your mind and body after a long day. If you prefer to, you can also submerge your feet in the soak for the same results!
5. Try cosmeticsto brighten dark spots on your hands
In order to lighten dark spots on your hands, try products containing vitamin C, as this substance has the potential of preventing hyperpigmentation.
Beware of skin brightening products that contain mercury as they’re extremely hazardous to your health. Before using any of these products, make sure to thoroughly research any possible risks they might cause.
6. Pay special attention to your cuticles
Dry cuticles, unfortunately, make your hands look untidy. A way to drastically change the appearance of your hands is by moisturizing your cuticles. You can do this by using special moisturizing products, or even olive oil. Gently massage it into your cuticles and you’re good to go!

7. Wear gloves for driving or house chores
Using gloves is a way to keep your hands safe from harm and potential injuries that could cause dark spots. For example, using gloves for driving is a way to protect your hands from UVA and UVB rays. Also, it’s important to prevent your hands from getting dry or bruised by wearing gloves for house chores, such as washing dishes, gardening, or even handling chemical cleaning products.
8. Consider fat injections
“No, it’s not for everyone, but if you really want to make the skin on your hands look fuller and more youthful, fat injection is one of the best ways,” Dr. Michelow says.
“The gold standard is to take your own fat from your tummy, butt or thighs and place it into the hollow areas on the back of your hands,” he says. This treatment requires minor surgery with one or two weeks of recovery.
Synthetic injections are also an option. However, “using your own fat lasts longer and rejection is not an issue,” Dr. Michelow says.
Polylactic acid is another minimally invasive treatment option. “It is a biocompatible, biodegradable powder that the body gradually and naturally absorbs,” he says.
9.Eat a healthy diet
A balanced diet with plenty of vitamins antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids nourishes your skin and helps you grow healthy nails. If your diet is low in certain proteins, vitamin C, or vitamin B complex or if you have poor absorption, your nails can become brittle and peel or flake easily. “Make sure to eat a balanced diet full of foods that are good for your skin which contain vitamins to nourish your hands from the inside out. You can also get yourself a good multivitamin,” Dr. Kassouf says.
Turn back the clock to reverse aging hands
If your hands already look older than you’d like, it’s not too late. Most problems can be treated to bring back a more youthful appearance. Age spots can be improved with over-the-counter or prescription topical creams containing retinol or retinoid acid. If these aren’t as effective as you’d like, chemical peels or laser treatments in your doctor’s office can bring about more dramatic results. Thin, bony hands can be plumped up with injections of synthetic fillers or your own body fat. And certain laser treatments can stimulate collagen production and tighten loose skin. For all signs of aging keep eating your vitamins and stay moisturized, protected from the sun and hydrated. “Talk to your doctor about how to treat the signs of aging on your hands and what works best for you to treat any long-term damage,” Dr. Kassouf emphasizes. “We’re all washing and sanitizing our hands a lot more than we used to,” Dr. Kassouf says. “This can break down our skins barrier function resulting in rough, dry and inflamed skin that can increase the penetration of chemicals, allergens and other infections.”
There are two kinds of products to use to help heal your skin. The first are humectants, ingredients like hyaluronic acid that help bind water into the skin to hydrate it. Second, there are products containing lipids or fats that are the emollients that improve the barrier function of the skin, helping to keep all of the unwanted things out. “Both are important now more than ever for the health and beauty of you skin and especially your hands,” Dr. Kassouf emphasizes. |
