As one of the entrants on the 200-strong list describes the state of affairs when it comes to password security, "whatever," it seems many of us are still reluctant to use strong, difficult-to-crack passwords -- and instead, we are going for options including "football," "iloveyou," "letmein," and "pokemon."
Chances are that if a password is easy for you to remember, a hacker can easily crack it. Basic passwords that take less than a second to crack remain incredibly popular, according to an annual survey released by password manager software NordPass, which analyzed a database of nearly 275.7 million passwords.
"Picture1," used by more than 371,600 accounts, was a rare new entry at number three. Just behind it was “password” with more than 360,400 users. Other easy-to-guess passcodes in the top 20 include: "qwerty," "1234," "iloveyou" and "password1."
NordPass worked with a third-party provider to evaluate a database containing 275,699,516 passwords. Of those, only 122,894,788, or 44%, were unique. The others were repeats of common, easy-to-remember passwords that leave users highly vulnerable to online threats. Only 78 out of 200 of the most used-passwords this year were new. |
If your password is among the top 200, NordPass cybersecurity expert Chad Hammond encourages you to change it immediately. “Most of these passwords can be hacked in less than a second,” says Hammond. “Also, they have already been exposed in previous data breaches. For example, the most popular password, ‘123456,’ has been breached 23,597,311 times.”

How to createstronger passwords?
*Avoid using dictionary words, number combinations, or strings of adjacent keyboard combinations. For instance, “password”, “qwerty”, or “123456” are terrible passwords, as they are too easy to crack.
Also, refrain from repetitive characters, such as “aaaa” or “123abc”, and under no circumstances choose passwords based on personal details that might not be completely confidential, such as your phone number, birth date, or name.
*Never reuse passwords across multiple accounts. Create a unique one for each account and make them long — don’t settle for anything shorter than 12 characters, even more if you can.
Use a mix of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols to significantly lower the risk of getting your passwords cracked. Also, make sure to change your passwords at least every 90 days.
