After a period where it looked like Sony and Disney might have ended their ongoing collaboration, everyone’s favorite web-slinger will be returning in what’s set to be the most ambitious movie in the series yet.

Even though a lot of information about the project has seemingly been leaked, there’s still much about Spider-Man: No Way Home that we don’t yet know. Below, we'll explain what we know so far about the movie, including its cast, release date, and story. We'll also let you know what we'd like to see in the film.

Expect plenty of spoilers for Spider-Man Far From Home and WandaVision below, if you haven't seen those yet.

Spider-Man 3 release date: When is Spider-Man No Way Home out?

Long story short, the Far From Home sequel will be released in UK and US cinemas on December 17, 2021.

Whether or not that's set in stone remains to be seen as it's been moved a couple of times already, most recently from November 5, 2021 after Black Widow was first delayed and Avatar 2 was moved back a year by Disney.

A lot of 2021 release dates are subject to delays with the current global situation, and Sony boss Tony Vinciquerra said in September 2020 that Spider-Man: No Way Home will only be released if cinemas are back "open and operating at significant capacity".

Filming eventually got underway with Holland joining the set in Atlanta in late October after wrapping filming on the Uncharted video game movie. Production wrapped in late March, barring any reshoots.

The confirmation came from second unit director George Cottle who shared an image of the fake titles board from the official announcement.

Eagle-eyed fans also spotted Cottle hashtagging the name of Chris Daniels, who was Tobey Maguire's stunt double in the original Spider-Man trilogy, with some fans taking this as confirmation of the exciting returns.

However, Daniels also worked on the previous Spider-Man MCU movies, as well as the likes of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, so you can't read too much into it.

Holland revealed the filming was actually a "full circle" moment as he was back filming on the same stage where he did his Spider-Man audition.

"Walking through the same door I walked through as an 18-year-old kid nervous, like, 'Oh my god, I hope I get this job!'" he reflected. "And then walking through the door at 24, making the third movie, loving life, confident, enjoying everything that's happening for me." according to Digitalspy.

Spider-Man: No Way Home cast details and rumors

Right now, we only know a few details about the film’s casting for certain. Tom Holland will return as Peter Parker, Jacob Batalon will return as Peter's friend Ned, and Zendaya will return as MJ – all three were seen in the first stills for No Way Home (see above). You'll see Marisa Tomei play Aunt May again, too.

In addition, Tony Revolori is expected to reprise his role as Flash Thompson.

Other than that, we're in rumor and leaks territory. Numerous characters from across the MCU and previous Spider-Man projects are set to make a comeback, which is why anticipation for Spider-Man: No Way Home is so high.

A report has suggested Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his role as Doctor Strange in the upcoming film – and at Disney's Investor Day in 2020, Marvel's Kevin Feige confirmed the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will tie into the third Spider-Man movie.

We also know that Jamie Foxx will be returning as the villain Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in Spider-Man: No Way Home, thanks to a since-deleted Instagram post. The Hollywood Reporter says that Alfred Molina will also return as the villain Otto Octavius from Spider-Man 2 after GWW reported that Molina had been spotted on-set.

How will these villains end up in Peter Parker's reality? Or vice versa? That's the big mystery we're waiting to unpack.

The rumors have gone further than that, with one Collider report suggesting that past Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will play some part in this film, suggesting some kind of multiversal team-up – Spider-Verse in live-action, perhaps. These claims have since been debunked by Tom Holland, however.

Finally, for now, we've seen rumors that Charlie Cox will be reprising his role as Daredevil from the eponymous Netflix series. The original reporting from Murphy’s Multiverse has since been corroborated by Comic book, which said he was apparently seen on the set of the film. We'll have to wait and see with that one, though a February 2021 casting call did suggest a courtroom scene was being filmed.

It's unclear what the canonical status of the Daredevil TV show is at this point, though we wouldn't be against seeing parts of the series salvaged for the MCU, TechRadar reported.

What will the next Spider-Man movie be called?

CONFIRMED: After months of speculation, we finally know that the third entry in Tom Holland’s superhero saga will be titled Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The news comes shortly after Holland joined forces with his co-stars Jacob Batalon and Zendaya to release three fake names for the film – Phone Home, Home Wrecker and Home Slice – which succeeded in fooling some fans.

This prank was seemingly part of Sony’s publicity strategy for the much-anticipated project, as it is referenced in this official clip unveiling the true title.

The reveal of Spider-Man: No Way Home has sparked fresh speculation that this movie will see the wallcrawler swinging into a Spider-Verse story, as it suggests he could find himself trapped in an alternate universe.

Prior to this announcement, fans had put forward their own comedy suggestions, which included Home Run, Work From Home, and Homesick.

Spider-Man: No Way Home plot theories

As is typical for an MCU movie, plot details are few and far between right now, although there is heavy fan speculation that we could get a live-action Spider-Verse storyline in this third outing.

The return of Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange very much fuelled this fan theory, with the Sorcerer Supreme potentially guiding Peter Parker through the multiverse.

Speaking about how Doctor Octopus would be able to return despite his death in Spider-Man 2, Molina explained that he was told by director Jon Watts, “In this universe, no one really dies” and that his storyline would pick up from his drowning in the East River at the end of the 2004 film – which again hints that a multiverse angle is certainly possible.

Both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire have been associated with this blockbuster sequel too, but they remain unconfirmed at the time of writing and Holland has recently denied their involvement.

Besides, there may not be time for a full Spider-Verse saga when the sequel will also have to resolve the cliffhanger ending of Far from Home, which saw Peter Parker unmasked as Spider-Man in a viral report by conspiracy theorist J Jonah Jameson (JK Simmons).

If that wasn’t bad enough, he was also framed as a murderer in doctored footage leaked by the late Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), meaning he could find himself in hot water with law enforcement.

Another possibility for the third film includes the prospect of the Sinister Six (Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Electro, Mysterio, Sandman, and Kraven the Hunter) appearing on-screen together, something which has been teased by the producer Amy Pascal.

Given that Sony and Marvel’s new deal currently only extends to one more solo movie, it could also be that the film will have to give a reason for Peter leaving the MCU after that. We’re calling multiverse shenanigans again, Radio times wrote.

Spider-Man: No Way Home Tobey Maguire leaks

When Spider-Man: No Way Home stunt coordinator George Cottle posted about the production of No Way Home wrapping, he may have planted an Easter egg in said post. His tagging of Chris Daniels, who was the stunt-man for Tobey Maguire in the earlier Spider-Man movies, makes people think that Maguire will definitely appear in the movie. Nothing is confirmed, though.

Then, Roger Pera (who often does the Spanish language voice-dubbing for Maguire), practically confirmed it as well.

Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer

Reports suggest that Sony Pictures may be holding onto a Spider-Man 3 trailer, that it's just waiting to drop.

Why wait? Supposedly they need Tobey Maguire to sign on the dotted line. That means we could see the trailer any day now.

And we really want to see this trailer, if all the above casting news is correct.

Spider-Man: No Way Home villain

This doesn't come from the best source, but if you're wondering who the Spider-Men will fight, We Got This Covered is claiming that Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin will be the main villain for Spider-Man 3. We wouldn't be surprised to see Norman Osbourne abusing the powers of the multiverse for greedy gains.

Previously, Kraven The Hunter was expected to be the big bad for Spider-Man: No Way Home, but (no offense) his powers don't seem strong enough to stop three Spider-Men, Toms Guide cited.

What happened with Sony and Marvel?

Essentially what happened was that after three years of making Spider-Man movies together, Sony and Marvel’s coproduction deal fell apart, with sources suggesting Disney wanted a bigger slice of the profits than Sony was willing to give.

There was a huge fan backlash against the change with many pinning the blame on Sony, and for a while, it seemed unlikely that a new deal would be made.

However, a few months later the two studios struck a new deal to create one last solo Spider-Man movie together, and to include Tom Holland’s webbed wonder in at least one more MCU team-up movie. After that, who knows?

“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” said Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige in a statement.

“Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”

“This is terrific,” added Sony exec Amy Pascal. “Peter Parker’s story took a dramatic turn in Far From Home and I could not be happier we will all be working together as we see where his journey goes.

“This has been a winning partnership for the studios, the franchise, and the fans and I’m overjoyed it will continue.”

In a surprise twist, apparently, it may have been Holland who saved the partnership, with reports suggesting the deal was “100 percent dead” until the young actor used his influence at Sony and Disney to thaw relations and get people back around the table (via Hollywood Reporter).

Will the next Spider-Man movie star Venom and Morbius?

While Spider-Man is part of the MCU, Sony has already been developing its own franchise of Spidey villains unconnected to that franchise, starting with Tom Hardy’s Venom in 2018 and continuing with Morbius (starring Jared Leto).

Now that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe again, it seems unlikely he’ll meet up with Sony’s antiheroes just yet – though after the new deal concludes, it could be that he’ll then appear.

Will there be a Spider-Man Sinister Six movie?

Rumour has it that long-dead plans for a Sony movie based around the Sinister Six – a loose collection of Spider-Man villains that often includes Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, and Sandman – could be back on the cards.

Sony executive Amy Pascal has hinted that the presence of Vulture, Mysterio, and sometimes team member Shocker in the recent Spider-Man movies could point towards a team-up in the future.

“These villains we now have in our universe happen to be characters that are in the Sinister Six,” Pascal said. “There may be something that happens with that.”

Previously, Sony had worked on a script with writer-director Drew Goddard to be spun out of Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man incarnation, but when that film series was called off the idea was mothballed.

But as recently as last December Pascal had suggested she fancied bringing the idea back to life.

“I’m just waiting for Drew to be ready to direct it,” Pascal told Vanity Fair. “I would do anything with Drew Goddard. I’m just waiting for him to tell me he wants to.”
