Rick and Morty has an even more intensive production process than many animated shows, which we'll get to in a moment — but at times, during these long Rick-less and Morty-free stretches in between airings, it can seem like its producers simply enjoy keeping fans endlessly pining for more episodes. In May 2018, long after its third season had completed, Rick and Morty received a whopping 70-episode renewal from Adult Swim, so we know that there are truckloads of new adventures on the way — but for the time being, we don't even know exactly when season 4 will resume (perhaps because Rick and Summer are currently stuck fighting off waves of android Mortys in a Pringles commercial).
Unfortunately, that means that we know even less about the status of Rick and Morty season 5 — but, using the information we do have on hand, we can make some educated guesses about when we can expect to see it, who will be involved, and when we might know more. If you're as anxious for more Rick and Morty as we are, you might want to bookmark this page, because we'll be updating it with any and all new info whenever it becomes available.
Rick And Morty Season 5: Release Date
Fans can rejoice as Adult Swim has already announced it has commissioned 70 new episodes of the show, ahead of the series four renewal.
The animated series will return for its fifth season on Sunday, June 20 at 11/10c.
The fourth season of the show has now finished airing in both the US and the UK and has been split across two parts.
The first part came to an end just before Christmas 2019 and a further five episodes were then be released in 2020.
Therefore, it is likely viewers will be able to watch it at some point after this.
However, creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland have confirmed the wait between season four and season five will not be as long as previous series.
Roiland told Entertainment Weekly: “We’re rolling right into the next batch. The plan has always been to get them out quicker.”
Harmon added: “I think it’s safe to say without fear of being wrong that the gap between seasons 3 and 4 will be the longest and last time that it’s ever so long that it’s ridiculous.
“I don’t know how fast we can do it, but I know it will never be this long again.” according to Express.

Where To Watch Rick and Morty in Australia
Here in Australia, the Adult Swim series has been readily available on Netflix since the first season, and we can expect the smash-hit will remain there for the foreseeable future. While in the past we’ve had to wait weeks, even months for the series to make its way to Australian shores after its US debut, Rick and Morty Season 4 had the same week streaming release on Netflix in Australia. As such, the Rick and Morty season five release date is expected to coincide with the US unveiling, landing on Netflix, Manofmany suggested.
How can I watch Rick and Morty seasons 1-4?Seasons one to three of Rick and Morty are available to watch on Netflix, and also air in the evenings on E4. Season four aired exclusively on E4 at 10pm on Wednesdays with the new episodes then made available to stream on All4. It then joined the earlier episodes on Netflix, arriving on the streaming platform on Tuesday 16th June. And if you want to get another fix of the time-travelling pair before the next season airs, a new short recently debuted – inspired by anime but otherwise very much showcasing the Rick and Morty than we’ve come to know over the last four seasons, Radio Times cited. |
Rick and Morty season 5 cast: the same as it ever was
As far as we know, the Rick and Morty season 5 cast will remain exactly the same as those that have come before it – at least in terms of the main players.
Justin Roiland is (obviously) back as both Rick and Morty. Sarah Chalke will continue voicing Beth and Clone Beth while, similarly, Chris Parnell (Jerry) and Spencer Grammer (Summer) are also returning for a fifth season. Aquaman rip-off Mr. Nimbus' voice actor is likely to be Roiland, though that hasn't been confirmed.
Expect to see some famous faces crop up, too. Season 4 saw the likes of Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi and Jurassic World: Dominion returnee Sam Neill drop on by for bit-part roles. No guest stars have been confirmed for season 5 as of writing though, Gamesradar noted.
Rick and Morty season 5 story: expect new worlds and adventures
Photo: netflix |
The teaser trailer doesn't give too much of season 5's plot away. It's only there to drum up the hype for the TV show's return, but we've speculated on what might form part of season 5's story below.
One of the mysteries we know we'll see develop at some point is Clone Beth, as we don't know whether the sister we've known since the beginning is truly 'ours'. Speaking to ComicBook, Harmon said, "She’s Schrodinger’s Beth right now. The fact she may or may not be a clone is actually the important thing. It’s the profound revelation about Rick’s commitment to non-commitment and how abusive that can be as a parent."
We don't know much about Rick and Morty's future escapades, but at least Roiland aims to always keep the show fresh, and not cover old ground. To EW, Roiland said, "One philosophy we tend to adopt is to keep moving forward with new ideas, new worlds, and not look back as often as other shows might, just in fear of that coming off as disingenuous fan service."
That said, we do know from the early footage that Morty's 'will-they-won't-they' flirtation with Jessica will continue, as Jessica invites Morty round to her house to watch a movie as he and Rick plummets to the ocean of an alien planet. However, Harmon has also teased at a virtual PaleyFest NY 2020 panel that "There's an episode in season five where Morty has a relationship with another female character that's not Jessica."
We also know that we'll meet Rick's long-forgotten, and decidedly unimpressive, nemesis Mr Nimbus. Seemingly voiced by Arrested Development's David Cross, this may be the next cameo coming to the comedy cartoon, Tech Radar reported.
How many episodes will there be in Rick and Morty season 5?
So far, every season of Rick and Morty has clocked in at ten episodes, and we don't expect that season 5 will be any different. If this sounds like a bit of a paltry total, you can blame it on one of the things you probably love most about the show: its complete willingness to indulge in bizarre, hilarious, ultimately irrelevant asides.
Take it from Nathan Litz, animation director at Bardel Entertainment, which animates the series. "You just don't get the full feeling of how much effort goes into every episode by watching the 22 minutes fly by on the TV," Litz explained in a recent interview with Vulture. "I can't even think of a direct [comparison] because every other show is concerned with keeping it as conservative as possible, in terms of character count, locations, and so on. Whereas [on Rick and Morty], they love to send someone off to some other universe, and give them three seconds with 15 different scenes, different background angles, different characters... it's about making it the biggest spectacle that it can be — which takes an awful lot of work to bring to life."
We've got to admit that this makes a great deal of sense, and while we'd love for each season of Rick and Morty to offer up 22 episodes (which was the standard count for your average series seemingly forever), or even 13 (which has become more the norm in recent years), the series will almost certainly be sticking to the ten-episode count for the foreseeable future, Looper wrote.
Rick and Morty season 5: What about future seasons?Away from season 5, we know that future seasons are also set to arrive. At a virtual Paleyfest NY 2020 panel (via Syfy Wire), Dan Harmon said scripting is going so well that they were almost done with writing season 6 at the time. "We are very late writing season 6," he said. "I'm looking at finales for both seasons and then also refining the finale of one and then the premiere of the other." As we stated above, Harmon also told SXSW's Animating From Home panel that work on season 7 had begun. Given that his comments came on March 22, and that Harmon said work would begin a week after that date, season 7 production should have started by now. That means that we may not have to wait as long between seasons as we have done up to this point. Like season 4, season 3 was delayed, but that log wait was due to protracted contract negotiations between Roiland, Harmon and Adult Swim. However, the pair's new contract struck in 2018 with the cable network, including at least 70 more episodes of the show, has given them the security to produce episodes better and faster. It also seems likely the show will go on after season 10. Harmon told EW, "Sure I’ll end it! But I don’t know that would be on 70. I would be equally unsurprised if you told me that this thing goes for 20 years. I wouldn’t balk at that at all. If it still feels right, let’s do it." Roiland agreed: "We have characters that don’t really age, it’s very Simpsons-esque. There’s so much we can do to keep riding this train." No doubt hardcore fans are happy to watch this adult animated comedy for many years to come. |
