Sharpen your menu organizing skills, because the new Resident Evil 8 is back in the first person, full of twists, turns, and horrifying bio-mutated baddies.

It seems Capcom is ramping up efforts on the Resident Evil series with a rumoured Resident Evil 4 remake possibly also on the horizon, PC Games cites. True to the leaks, Resident Evil Village will reprise the role of Biohazard’s protagonist Ethan Winters, who, after the tumultuous events of the Baker house is now living the good life with his rescued wife Mia.

According to PC Gamer, Resident Evil Village's creepy first trailer was revealed at the Sony PlayStation 5 event back on June 11th, 2020. It's the eighth game in the series, but the number isn't included in the official title, drawing more attention to the mysterious setting of the game (you can still see the roman numeral VIII highlighted in the logo, though).

Capcom is combining elements of previous Resident Evil instalments to craft this next-generation game, and boy does it look weird, perplexing, and fun (poor Chris Redfield, unfortunately, does not look like he's having fun).

Biohazard received rave reviews for its brave switch to first-person horror, claustrophobic and unsettling location, and for finally bringing the series back to survival horror. So, what direction will Resident Evil Village be heading in? Here’s everything we know, from the Resident Evil 8 release date, to enemies, locations, and more.

Resident Evil 8: Release Date

Capcom reported the Resident Evil 8 PC release date is 2021. Although we’ve not been treated to a specific date just yet, Biohazard released in January, though Village has not been confirmed to release in the same month of this year.

Resident Evil 8: Characters

The protagonist of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Ethan's story continues in Resident Evil VILLAGE. After being swept up into the events of the Baker estate incident, this regular nobody somehow managed to escape that nightmare alive, as cited by Resident Evil. Ever since he has lived a quiet existence with his wife Mia under the protection of the BSAA.

Chris Redfield

A mainstay of the series since the first Resident Evil, this former S.T.A.R.S. member has fought his way through numerous bioterror incidents. He currently works as a specialist for the BSAA, a counter-bioterror NGO.

New Enemy: The Witch

According to The Gamer, details have been revealed regarding a new enemy that will be stalking the player through the game. Apparently, it’ll function in a manner similar to Nemesis in Resident Evil 3: Remake in that it’s an unkillable enemy that hounds the player through the levels.

While the details regarding her appearance and origin haven’t been revealed, the leak has suggested that she’ll be similar to Marguerite from Resident Evil VII in that she’ll utilize insects to harass the player and has a creepy laugh.

Resident Evil 8: Settings

It may come as a surprise, but Resident Evil Village will in fact take place in a village.

It's a gothic, snowy place with beasts, betrayal, and people just trying to survive. The special developer message trailer showed off the inventory system which seems to have a currency component (spot the Romanian "Lei" in the top right corner of the menu). This means that there could be another merchant in this game and that this cursed village is somewhere in Romania.

There was also a ritzy mansion showcased in that trailer, which brings back memories of the Spencer Mansion from the first Resident Evil. It all looks extremely clean running on the same RE Engine that was used to produce the Resident Evil 2 and 3, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, and Devil May Cry 5.

Resident Evil 8: Gameplay

Before we begin, we should probably address the fact that a Resident Evil 8 development build was leaked as part of the Capcom hack. We will not be covering anything that was leaked via the hack.

Resident Evil 8 is set to be another first-person survival horror game, Capcom associate manager of social media and community Kellen Haney says in a PlayStation blog post, “The return of a first-person perspective will bring a visceral edge to combat, as well. Each encounter is a personal fight for survival against terrifying foes, forcing you to keep a watchful eye on the environment and constantly looking for resources and enemies in unknown territory.”

There will also be a “greater focus on combat” so expect more action, along with the classic Resident Evil inventory management, forcing players to be careful with resources.

Resident Evil 8 will also feature “a lot more freedom” than Resident Evil 7, offering space to experiment as has been possible in the recent Resident Evil remakes. Exactly what this means in terms of gameplay it’s hard to fathom, but if you found the linear style of Resident Evil 7 a little too claustrophobic then this is good news.

How is Resident Evil 8 connected to previous Resident Evil games?

It takes place a couple of years after Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, focusing on the stories of Ethan and Mia Winters after they busted out of that plantation, ran away from the twisted Baker family, and finally settled down. It's not entirely clear why or how, but Chris Redfield, a playable character from the first Resident Evil who has since become a recurring part of the series, has decided to take on an antagonistic role and uproot them from their happy life. It's seemingly a pretty huge character change.

Redfield is beefier and more brooding than in the past, and in the trailer, he stands menacingly above Winters and before shooting a woman multiple times on the floor. We have no idea why Redfield has no chill in Resident Evil Village—it seems like whatever's going on, it'll be both messy and intriguing.

A symbol of what looks like a fetus/face mashup with twigs and feathers was sprinkled through the trailers, and there's already a lot of fan speculation as to its meaning. Capcom wants people to "pay extra close attention to this one," because it is likely an important part of the game, and could possibly have a connection to the Umbrella Corporation (whose logo was also flashed in the trailer, surrounded by mysterious crests).

Resident Evil 8: Story

Capcom has not revealed a lot about Resident Evil 8: Village story. The protagonist of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Ethan Winters, is the protagonist here too. The events will take place in a dark snowy European village, as cited bu OMG Gamer.

The plot is set a few years after the events of the Baker Mansion in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. During a press release following the Sony PS5 reveal event on June 11 Capcom’s Kellen Haney said about the story: “Ethan’s world suddenly comes crashing down once again when Chris Redfield, an unexpected yet familiar face makes an appearance, setting off a chain of events that sees a distraught Ethan seeking answers to Chris’s shocking actions, and ultimately finding him in a mysterious village.”

Will Resident Evil Village have an online mode?

According to the Capcom leak from November, Village will have an online mode that's codenamed "Dominion". We don't know anything else about it yet, including its actual name or what kind of multiplayer mode it will be. Here's hoping it does better than Resident Evil 3 Resistance.
