This Thursday, all federal agencies, schools, universities, and many workplaces will remain closed. Employees who were scheduled to be off on this day will not be charged leave, while those required to work will be eligible for holiday premium pay, depending on their roles. Essential personnel in areas like national security, defense, or critical operations must report to work despite the closures.

Additionally, all American flags will be flown at half-staff for 30 days across the U.S. and at American embassies, consulates, and military facilities worldwide, as per President Biden’s directive.

Financial markets, including the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq, will be closed on January 9. The bond market, overseen by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, will also suspend operations early at 2 p.m. EST.

Flags at Half-Staff

President Biden ordered U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff for 30 days, starting from Carter’s date of death. This order applies to:

The White House, public buildings, and grounds.

Military posts, naval stations, and vessels of the federal government.

U.S. embassies, consulates, and facilities abroad.

This follows the long-standing tradition of halting financial and government activities to honor deceased presidents. The most recent closure occurred on December 5, 2018, for President George H.W. Bush’s funeral.

Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, served from 1977 to 1981. He was widely respected for his public service, particularly his contributions to civil service reform and humanitarian efforts.
