The current holder of the accolade is midfielder Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese star won the trophy for his exploits in 2019/20, which included 12 goals and eight assists from 22 games in all competitions.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2020/21: WHO'LL WIN IT?

It is always difficult to predict who will win Manchester United's Players' Player of the Year award. Man United look to end a positive season on a high, hopefully with some silverware after the Europa League final against Villarreal on 26 May.

Anthony Martial was last term's winner after scoring 17 goals in the Premier League and netting four times during the run to the Europa League semi-finals during a season interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

David De Gea has landed both accolades in three different seasons, while Cristiano Ronaldo achieved the feat in 2006/07 and 2007/08. Luke Shaw was the last dual winner a couple of years ago and is an obvious contender again this term.

Bruno Fernandes won the fan-voted prize in 2019/20 and is another who should be in the running for the players' award but Eric Bailly may have provided some insight into the squad's thinking when suggesting recently his vote could be going to Aaron Wan-Bissaka or Shaw.

Influential skipper Harry Maguire could also prove popular and it will be intriguing to find out who gets the nod when the victor is revealed.

Who is the first Player of the Year in Manchester United

The first Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award was presented in 1988, with Brian McClair the inaugural winner.

The prize is voted for by the club's supporters, and runs alongside the Players' Player of the Year award.

David de Gea is the most frequent claimant of the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award, with four triumphs, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo, who emerged as the club's outstanding player in 2004, 2007 and 2008.

Beyond Ronaldo, there are five players tied on two gongs each: McClair, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney.

In total, there have been 23 different winners of the award, across 13 different nationalities. The prize for 2021 will be the 34th in the award's history, although a 'Player of the Year' gong has existed since 1972, with the Manchester United Supporters' Club Player of the Year awarded until 1985, and a Sharp-sponsored version given out - both times to centre-back Paul McGrath - in 1986 and 1987.
