The national anthem of Malaysia was created in 1957 and the selection of the song was made by the former Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah. The rhythm of the “Negaraku” was quoted from the rhythm of the state anthem of Perak. The state anthem of Perak had the original idea of the song “Terang Bulan” which is a song favoured by Sultan Abdullah, the Sultan of Perak, while he was in exile on the island of Seychelles.

To advance as a country, "Negaraku" stresses loyalty and solidarity. This tune is meant to inspire a deeper sense of national pride and loyalty. While the country was getting ready to celebrate Independence Day, the idea to write a national anthem emerged. On August 31, 1957, the date of independence proclamation, the national song shall be played.

As a result, a contest to write a national anthem was held in February 1957. Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj headed the Special Committee of the National Anthem Selection (JKPLK), which ultimately decided against the four songs that had made it to the final round. Instead, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj suggested using the Anthem of Perak as the basis for a new national anthem for Malaysia. The rest of JKPLK was in favor of the idea as well.

Alfonso Soliano (leader of the Radio Orchestra of Malaya), D.S.P Croff (music director of the Royal Police Band), Captain Lenthall (music director of the Malay Military Band in Port Dickson), and A. T. Reed composed the music for the song "Negaraku" (General Director of Radio Malaya). The Malay Sultans unanimously approved the words to the national anthem, "Negaraku," which were penned by a Special Committee directed by Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj.

In the early hours of August 31, 1957, at the Selangor Club field, the first rendition of the national song, "Negaraku," was performed. The Union Jack was taken down and the flag of the Malay Peninsula raised that night as the national song, "Negaraku," was played. From this point forward, "Negaraku" remained the official national anthem.

Full Lyrics in Original Bahasa Malaysia Words

Negara ku, tanah tumpahnya darah ku

Rakyat hidup bersatu dan maju

Rahmat bahagia, Tuhan kurniakan

Raja kita selamat bertakhta

(repeat previous two lines)

English Lyrics:

My country, my native land

The people living united and progressive

May God bestow blessing and happiness

May our Ruler have a successful reign

(repeat previous two lines)

The 'Negaraku', it is said, was derived from the Perak state hymn, which had a melodic structure with the keroncong-influenced 'Terang Bulan,' a famous song in Indonesia and Malaya during the 1930s.

This music was also well-known on Mahe, a Seychelles island where an exiled Perak Sultan made his home. When a French band would visit the island, they'd play this song.

Nonetheless, the tune's genesis remains a mystery.
