When is international Men's Day?

International Men’s Day is observed on November 19th, although when the holiday was first created it was celebrated in February.

History of International Men's Day

Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh founded International Men's Day in 1999. He taught history at the University of the West Indies. Since the 1960s, people have attempted to make International Men's Day equal to International Women's Day. They planned to celebrate on February 23rd.

In the early 1990s, organizations in the United States, Europe, and Australia held small events in February at the invitation of Thomas Oaster, director of the Missouri Center for Men's Studies at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. He successfully promoted the event in 1994, but it was a flop in 1995. The Maltese Association for Men's Rights then continued to observe the event each February on November 19, 2003. As previously stated by jagranjosh, the Maltese AMR Committee voted in 2009 to move the date to November 19 at the request of Australian International Men's Day organizers.

The organizers of the Australian IMD brought together several other countries to celebrate the date of November, and as a result, Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh inaugurated it in Trinidad and Tobago in 1999. Dads4kids celebrated in the NSW state parliament in 2008 and again in the federal parliament in Canberra, Australia, in 2013.

It is worth noting that International Men's Day as a global celebration owes a great deal to Indian Men's Advocate and mother of two Uma Challa. In 2007, he pioneered the celebration of International Men's Day in order to raise awareness about the shocking abuse that men face in the anti-male legal system. Do you know that Uma Challa founded several organizations, including the "Save the Indian Family Foundation"? She is also one of the organizers of International Boys Day. Umma Challa inspired Warwick Marsh, the founder of Dads4Kids, to take an International Men's Day celebration global and to focus the celebration on the men's movement around the world.

Why is International Men’s Day celebrated?

International Men's Day encourages men to open up and communicate with others in order to raise awareness about men's mental health issues, as well as other health and societal issues. Traditional ideas about what masculinity means in society are changing and must change if vulnerable men are to be protected from these dangerous conditions.

As stereotypes and discrimination begin to crumble in our culture, there is a growing need for boys and young men to identify with positive role models who exemplify the true qualities of masculinity. Kindness, generosity, inner strength, and natural, open communication are examples. International Men's Day, as well as the entire month of November, provide an excellent opportunity in our global culture to show the true face of masculinity to those who need to see it.

Many prominent men are now embracing International Men's Day, opening lines of communication and accepting responsibility for presenting this new wave of masculinity.

International Men's Day encourages men to teach their sons the values, character, and responsibilities of manhood. According to Mahatma Gandhi, "we must become the change we seek." Only by setting a good example, both men and women, will we be able to build a fair and secure society in which everyone has the opportunity to prosper, says the day of the year.

International Men's Day: Celebration

It is celebrated in a number of ways including public seminars, activities in classrooms to promote the day. Panel discussions and lectures, award ceremonies, art exhibitions are also held to bring attention to the day. Every year, this day is celebrated with a particular theme.

Therefore, International Men's Day is celebrated on 19 November every year with an objective to improve men's and boy's health, improve gender relations, to promote gender equality and to highlight the positive role of male models.

International Men's Day Activities

Numerous nonprofit organizations work to improve the lives of men. The Gay Men's Health Crisis works to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS and supports individuals living with the virus in achieving better health and self-sufficiency. (Despite the name, straight men can also receive assistance from it). Testicular cancer awareness and the significance of self-examination are promoted by the Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation. Additionally, the ManKind Initiative is committed to assisting men in escaping and recovering from abuse and domestic violence.

2. Learn more about lesser known influential men

Think about reading a book or seeing a film about a remarkable man whose contributions to society are still being felt today. The first Black man to perform a successful open heart surgery is Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, whose story is told in The Black American Experience. Alan Turing, the man who created modern computing and contributed to the end of World War Two, is portrayed in The Imitation Game in a dramatic and poignant way. Which notable men are you interested in learning more about?

3. Check in with the men in your life

Although fostering healthy relationships with men is an admirable objective, it does not come without hardships. See how your male friends and family members are doing by checking in with them. Happiness at home is half the battle won.
