What is a watt?

How to Convert Watts to Amps and Amps to Watts: Simplest Ways to Change

A watt is a unit of power. It is the amount of energy an item needs to function; the rate at which energy is consumed.

One watt is equivalent to electricity flowing at a rate of one joule (unit of energy) per second.

The symbol for a watt is ‘W’.

What is power?

Power is the rate at which energy is either produced or consumed; the rate at which energy flows. Power is measured in watts.

What is energy?

Energy is the capacity to do work – such as creating light, heat, or motion.

What is a watt-hour?

A watt-hour is a unit of energy. It is the amount of energy an item consumes over a given timeframe; a way to measure the amount of work generated or performed.

Watt hours are generally measured in kilowatt-hours.

The symbol for watt-hours is ‘Wh’.

Watts are like miles-per-hour

Let's start with that 60-watt lightbulb. Power is a measure of the rate at which energy flows, and in electrical systems it is measured in watts (W). Watts are basically the miles-per-hour measurement of the electrical world--they tell you how fast the electrons are speeding down the highway. For those who are keeping track, one watt is equivalent to electricity flowing at a rate of one joule per second in the metric system, which is also equivalent to 3.4 Btus per hour.

A 60-watt lightbulb will consume electricity at a rate of 60 watts. A laborer working through the day will put out 75 watts of power. A medium-sized car might consume 100,000 watts. (One horsepower is equivalent to 750 watts, so that's a 286-hp car.) A small gasoline generator puts out 2,000 watts; the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant puts out 650 megawatts, or 650,000,000 watts. Many other pieces of equipment come with power ratings to describe the rate at which they use energy.

What’s the difference between watts and watt-hours?

Watts measure power

Watt-hours measure energy

How to Convert Watts to Amps and Amps to Watts: Simplest Ways to Change

An "amp", short for ampere, is a unit of electrical current which SI defines in terms of other base units by measuring the electromagnetic force between electrical conductors carrying electric current. The ampere is that constant current which, if maintained in two straight parallel conductors of infinite length, of negligible circular cross-section, and placed one metre apart in vacuum, would produce between these conductors a force equal to 2×10−7 newtons per metre of length.

What is amperage?

"Amperage" is the strength of a current of electricity expressed in amperes.

Appliances are rated based on power

Boilers and furnaces are also sized based on their heating power, in Btus per hour in the U.S., and in kilowatts elsewhere. A typical residential unit puts out 100,000 Btu/hr (29 kW) while commercial units tend to be much more powerful. A 100,000 Btu/hr boiler burning at full power for a day will produce 2.4 million Btus of heat (700 kWh).

How much energy does your entire home or workplace use? Overall energy consumption of buildings, including both electricity and other fuels, is typically counted in million Btus per year (which is usually abbreviated as MMBtu--don't ask).

To get a single whole-building MMBtu number, we have to convert all fuel sources into that unit, and then add them up. You can find conversion ratios for doing this online, which include all fuel sources you might use, such as propane, cordwood, natural gas, coal, and others. The Home Energy Yardstick from the federal Energy Star program makes this really easy--Google it.

To convert electrical power to electrical current (Watts to Amps), we need to use the electrical power equation:

P = I*V

where:

P is electrical power, measured in Watts (W)

I is electrical current or amperage, measured in Amps (A).

V is electrical potential or voltage, measured in Volts (V). The standard voltage for most electrical devices is 110-120V, and upgraded voltage powerful electric devices use 220V.

How many watts in 1 amp at 220 volts?

At 220V, you get 220W per 1 amp.

With that in mind, let’s look at the 3 examples:

Example 1: How Many Amps Is 500 Watts?

Let’s say we have a 500W air conditioner plug into 120 V voltage.

Here is how we can calculate how many amps is 500W:

I = P/V

If we input the P = 500 Watts and V = 120 Volts, we get:

I = 500 Watts/120 Volt = 4.17 Amps

In short, 500 Watts equals 4.17 Amps.

What if the voltage would be 220V?

Let’s calculate how many amps is 500W at 220V:

I = 500 Watts/220 Volt = 2.27 Amps

At 220V, 500W draws 2.27 amps.

Example 2: How Many Amps Is 1000 Watts?

If we repeat the exercise and ask ourselves how many Amps equals 1000 Watts, we get:

I = 1000 Watts/120 Volt = 8.33 Amps

We see that a 1000 W device draws twice as many Amps as a 500 W device.

For 220V, we get this watts to amps calculation:

I = 1000 Watts/220 Volt = 4.55 Amps

In short, 1000W draws 8.33 amps at 120V, and 4.55 amps at 220V.

Example 3: 3000 Watts Equals How Many Amps?

3000 Watt devices can be plugin in 120V or into 220V. In cases with higher wattage, it’s not unusual to use a higher 220 voltage. This is designed to reduce the amperage.

For example, 3000 Watt equals to:

25 Amps, if you use 120 V.

13.64 Amps, if you use 220 V.

For 25 Amps, for example, you would already need an amp breaker. But if you plug such a device into 220 V, the current generated is only 13.64 Amps (there is no need for amp breakers).

How Many Amps Are In A Watt?

Photo Acupwr
Photo Acupwr

For easier calculations, knowing how many amps are in a watt is very useful. We start with the original formula for electrical power:

P (W) = I (A) * V (V)

To calculate how many amps are in a watt, we need to specify the voltage. Let’s take the basic 120V. Here’s how we calculate the number of watts in a single amp:

P (W) = 1 A * 120 V = 120 W

As we can see, at 120V, 1 amp is equal to 120 W.

If we use the 220V voltage, we have this amps to watts equation:

P (W) = 1 A * 120 V = 220 W

At 220V, 1 amp is equal to 120 watts.

Let’s solve some real-life examples:

3 Amps To Watts (Example 1)

Let’s say that we have a 5000 BTU portable air conditioner. This is considered a very small air conditioner; it’s powered by only 3 amps.

How many watts does a 3 amp air conditioner use? It’s connected to 120V and we can use the upper amps to watts calculator to figure this out, like this:

3 amps is 360 watts

In short, 3 amps is 360 watts.

15 Amps To Watts (Example 2)

More powerful units, like washing machines and mini-split air conditioners, can be powered by 15 amps. How many watts is that?

Here’s the calculation of 15 amps to watts at 120V:

15 amps is 1800 watts

15 amps are equal to 1800 watts at 120.

If the voltage would be 220V, 15 amps would equal to 3300 W.

100 Amps To Watts (Example 3)

More powerful electrical units can draw as much as 100 amps. For these units, you already need amp breakers. 5 zone mini-split units are a good example of 100 amps electric devices.

They are hooked up to 220V because 120V would need even more current. Here’s the conversion of 100 amps to watts:

100 amps is 22000 watts

This is a massive 22,000 W device at 100 amps.
