There are approximately three million lakes in the United States, with the majority of them located in Alaska and formed by seasonal snowmelt. There are approximately 125,000 lakes in the lower 48 states (defined as a mass of water larger than twenty acres in size). Some of these lakes are formed by rivers, such as the Great Salt Lake in Utah, where evaporation and mineral run-off create salt water.
Other lakes, such as Lake Okeechobee in Florida, are formed by heavy rainfall. Many lakes in the Midwest region, including the Great Lakes, were formed by melting glaciers that carved out the land before filling it with water.

In fact, it’s estimated that Alaska could have up to 3 million unnamed lakes alone! They serve as water sources, recreational spots, and even sources of income. Yet, these lakes are spread unevenly among the USA’s 50 states.

1. Alaska
Because of its sheer size, Alaska has the most lakes in the country, with approximately 3,197 officially named natural lakes and 3 million unnamed natural lakes.
2. Michigan
According to their own rules for counting lakes, they only have 10,031. These all have a surface area of more than 5 acres. If you don't limit the number by that logic, the state has over 64,000 lakes and ponds. Ten of them are larger than 10,000 acres.
3. Florida
Florida has the third-highest number of lakes, with 30,000 covering over three-million acres of land. This includes Lake Okeechobee, the fourth largest naturally occurring lake in the US with a surface area of over 1,175 square miles.
4. Minnesota
Minnesota, the "Land of 10,000 Lakes," obviously does not have the most lakes in any state. Minnesota, on the other hand, has the most named lakes, with approximately 15,291 natural lakes, 11,824 of which are larger than 10 acres. When smaller lakes, particularly those in unincorporated areas, are included, the figure rises dramatically.
5. Wisconsin
Wisconsin has 15,074 lakes, second only to Minnesota. Only 6,044 lakes in Wisconsin are named.
