Pharmacists Day: History

The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), the global federation of national associations of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, came into existence on September 25, 1912.

World Pharmacist Day was created by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Council at the World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Istanbul, Turkey in 2009. September 25 is chosen as World Pharmacist Day because on this date FIP came into existence in 1912.

Though no one really knows when National Pharmacist Day first began, we do have an interesting history of pharmacy itself. When you take a step back and learn about the amazing contributions pharmacists have made to the medical world, your appreciation may grow even stronger.

5,000 BC – Healers in Ancient Egypt hung herbal remedies in the Heliopolis temple. These remedies were collected into “The Book of Ember”. Priests that were deemed good and honest were chosen as ancient pharmacists to be the keepers and teachers of these writings. Their temples, essentially early pharmacies, became a place of pilgrimage.

420 BC – You may know of Asclepius, who was the Greek god of healing and whose staff is still found in medical symbology today. But do you know of Hygeia, his pharmacist who was responsible for creating and distributing his cures? Her chalice is now the sigil of pharmacies and pharmacists across the world. The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) also presents the Bowl of Hygeia award each year to a pharmacist devoted to community service.

745 AD – The first official pharmacies opened in Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age.

1886 – In Atlanta, Georgia, pharmacist Joe Pemberton sold the first glass of Coca-Cola for 5 cents a pop. The prohibition-era beverage was marketed as a “temperance drink” and sold as an alternative to alcohol.

1917 – Agatha Christie served as a pharmacy dispenser during World War I. She used her real-life experience to inform her novels, which were even studied by pathologists to learn about poisons.

1928 – Scottish Pharmacist, Alexander Flemming discovered the antibiotic properties of penicillin. After several further developments, including the discovery of a strain found in a moldy cantaloupe, the US would produce over 600 billion units to aid the Allied war effort.

1963 – In May, the Melville Corporation opened the first of its Consumer Value Stores. Today, CVS is the largest drug store in the world, consulting and dispensing for millions of patients each year.

National Pharmacist Day In America - History

National Pharmacist Day has a history that dates back several decades.

"Historically, the primary role of a pharmacist was to check and distribute drugs to doctors for a patient prescribed medication; in modern times, pharmacists advise patients and health care providers on the selection, dosages, interactions and the side effects of prescriptions, along with having the role as a learned intermediary between a prescriber and a patient," according to National Day Calendar. "Monitoring the health and progress of patients, pharmacists can then ensure the safe and effective use of medication."

In fact, it was on September 28, 1928 that the world discovered the first breakthrough antibiotic. Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin. That's when pharmacists became really necessary to dispense these kinds of drugs. That said, it was in 754 AD that the first pharmacies were established, in Baghdad, during the Islamic Golden Age.

Then, on May 8, 1963, America's largest drug store made its debut. CVS opened its doors, becoming the largest pharmacy in the U.S., employing 24,000 pharmacists. But National Pharmacist Day wasn't celebrated all those years. It's only been in recent years that people have started to recognize the day.

That said, National Day Calendar cannot identify when exactly the day became a national holiday.

"Within our research, we were unable to find the exact creator of National Pharmacist Day," the site explains. "However, it is indicated that it is likely a group of pharmaceutical groups are founders."

Pharmacists Help with Medication Management: When a patient is seeing several doctors, particularly for chronic conditions, it can get confusing when they are taking a variety of different medications. Pharmacists offer Medication Therapy Management (MTM) to help patients optimize their drug therapy resulting in improved outcomes.

Pharmacists Are Highly Accessible: While getting to a doctor may be difficult or far away, 90% of Americans live within 5 miles of a pharmacy.
