"Take It To The Limit"
All alone at the end of the evening
When the bright lights have faded to blue
I was thinking 'bout a woman who might have
Loved me and I never knew
You know I've always been a dreamer
(Spent my life running 'round)
And it's so hard to change
(Can't seem to settle down)
But the dreams I've seen lately
Keep on turning out and burning out
And turning out the same
So put me on a highway
And show me a sign
And take it to the limit one more time
You can spend all your time making money
You can spend all your love making time
If it all fell to pieces tomorrow
Would you still be mine?
And when you're looking for your freedom
(Nobody seems to care)
And you can't find the door
(Can't find it anywhere)
When there's nothing to believe in
Still you're coming back, you're running back
You're coming back for more
So put me on a highway
And show me a sign
And take it to the limit one more time
Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit one more time
Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit
One more time
Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit
Come on and
Take it to the limit
One more time
Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit
You got to
Take it to the limit
One more time
Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit
One more time
Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit
Come on and
Take it to the limit
One more time
Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit
One more time
Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit
One more time
The Eagles

The Eagles, an American band that cultivated country-rock as the reigning style and sensibility of white youth in the United States during the 1970s. The original members were Don Henley (b. July 22, 1947, Gilmer, Texas, U.S.), Glenn Frey (b. November 6, 1948, Detroit, Michigan—d. January 18, 2016, New York, New York), Bernie Leadon (b. July 19, 1947, Minneapolis, Minnesota), and Randy Meisner (b. March 8, 1946, Scottsbluff, Nebraska). Later members included Don Felder (b. September 21, 1947, Topanga, California), Joe Walsh (b. November 20, 1947, Wichita, Kansas), and Timothy B. Schmit (b. October 30, 1947, Sacramento, California), according to Britannica.
The Eagles have had 10 songs make it to the top ten of the music charts, including “Take It to the Limit” (1976), “Hotel California” (1977), and “Heartache Tonight” (1979).
The Eagles made country rock the reigning style and sensibility of white youth in the United States in the 1970s. Before the Eagles recorded, country rock was a local alternative in late 1960s, Los Angeles. After they recorded, it became the soundtrack for the lives of millions of rock kids as an appealing alternative to glam rock and disco.
This is a good example of the "Southern California Sound," a mix of country, folk, and rock that the Eagles became known for. It's also a good example of melancholy lyrics wrapped in a sweet melody - another attribute of early Eagles songs. In this one, the singer has left longing for a woman and trying to make sense of it, Song Facts cites. Don Henley, Randy Meisner and Glenn Frey wrote this song. Meisner sang lead, making this one of only three US Top 40 Eagles songs not sung by Don Henley or Glenn Frey, the others being "I Can't Tell You Why" (sung by Timothy B. Schmit) and "In the City" (sung by Joe Walsh). Meisner, who is from rural Nebraska, was the most subdued member of the band, describing himself to Rolling Stone as "Shy and nervous about putting myself on the line." He was a founding member of the Eagles but left in 1977 as tensions rose and the lifestyle became too much for him. Leaving the band was a good mental health decision. Don Felder, who joined in 1974, told us: "Really the only thing you can do when you're in the Eagles is eat, breathe, and sleep Eagles. I mean, you're either on the road, writing in the studio, or doing press - it's just all-consuming." |
