This year, organizers are a little more optimistic.
With the vaccination program underway and mass testing available, several events have put tickets on sale, confident that fans will be allowed to mosh, pogo and stage-dive with the risk of injury, rather than the disease, their main concern.
Unfortunately, events scheduled early in the season - most notably Glastonbury - have already had to cancel. Many have cited the inability to obtain cancellation insurance as a factor.
Others have moved to safer dates later in the summer, with a noticeable bottleneck over the August bank holiday weekend.
To help you plan ahead, here's what the biggest festivals have announced, with all information correct at the time of writing on 23 March 2021, BBC reported.
Latitude Festival: 22-25 July 2021
The Suffolk festival took to Twitter to reveal that planning was "well underway" for the festival this year and organizers couldn't wait to be "reunited" with festival-goers this summer.
Tickets for Latitude Festival are on sale now.
Standon Calling: 22-25 July 2021
Standon Calling is set to take place on the same weekend as Latitude with headliners in Bastille, Hot Chip and Primal Scream. The event, which takes place in Hertfordshire, will celebrate its 15 anniversary with an exciting new lineup across music, family entertainment, late-night dance, comedy and much much more!
Visit standon-calling.com for the full line-up so far and to buy tickets.
Camp Bestival: Going ahead

A spokesperson for Camp Bestival told Metro.co.uk: ‘Rest assured we’re continuing to work behind the scenes to get ready for Camp Bestival this summer and hope to have more news for you soon. In the meantime, stay safe.
|Camp Bestival founder Rob da Bank confirmed that it will be going ahead on Good Morning Britain, as he revealed live on air: ‘There is literally nothing [co-founder] Josie and I like more in life than standing in a field surrounded by family and friends, dressed in daft outfits dancing to amazing bands and DJs…and Mr Tumble…and that’s exactly what we plan to be doing at Camp Bestival in 154 days, 15 hours and 27 minutes…not that we’re counting.’, said Metro.co.uk.|
South Facing Festival: 5-31 August 2021
South Facing Festival is a brand new outdoor concert series coming to south London this August.
Joining them for their debut edition at the Crystal Palace Bowl will be Dizzee Rascal & The Outlook Orchestra, Supergrass, The Streets, Max Richter and The National English Opera.
For more than a decade the Crystal Palace Bowl has lain dormant, but South Facing Festival intend to ‘reboot the rusty laptop’ (as it's affectionally known by locals) and bring live music back to one of its spiritual homes in South London.
Created by some of the people behind festivals including Field Day, Winterville, Cross The Tracks, Wide Awake and Dimensions, South Facing Festival aim to deliver a highly sustainable event series, which reinvigorates the venue and surrounding area, and ultimately has zero environmental impact.
Reading and Leeds Festival: 27-29 August 2021
The twin festivals, which take place on August Bank Holiday, took to Twitter this week to write: "Following the government's recent announcement, we can't wait to get back to the fields this summer Party popper LET'S GO Clinking beer mugs #RandL21".

Cross The Tracks: 5 Sep, Brockwell Park

Co-founder Sacha Lord told NME that he was "confident" the event, which takes place at Manchester's Heaton Park, would go ahead this year. In December, the festival was moved from June to 11-12 September to give organizers more time. It looks like it's paid off.
Now the acts have been announced with the likes of Dave, Megan Thee Stallion and Disclosure leading the line-up
