Final Olympic Medal Table: Where Did The U.S. Finish?
Officially, no country "wins" the Olympics, but for the countries that compete, getting the most medals, especially gold medals, is still a sign of victory. The United States was the first country to win more than 3,000 Olympic medals on Tuesday.
2024 Olympics Final Medal Count |
On Sunday, there were 14 gold medal games. The U.S. and China were tied at the start of the day for the most gold medals, which is how the International Olympic Committee (IOC) ranks medals. However, the U.S. ended the games with more than 100 medals, making it the only country to do so.
The US had 38 golds on Sunday, one less than China, which had 39.
The United States finished first in the medals table, tied with China for 40 gold medals but easily winning the silver medal tiebreaker 44-27. This was because the U.S. women's basketball team beat France by a score of 66-67 in the last seconds of the fourth quarter.
At Paris 2024, the US had 126 medals and China had 91.
The women's basketball gold medal game was the last chance for the U.S. to win a gold medal. China had 40 gold medals, while the U.S. only had 39.
In the women's volleyball gold medal match against Italy, the U.S. could have won all three gold medals, but Italy won 25-18, 25-20, and 25-17.

The U.S. still had a chance to tie China in the women's basketball gold medal game, though, thanks to Jennifer Valente's gold medal in the women's cycling omnium.
The IOC's rules say that if two countries finish with the same number of gold medals, the number of silver medals wins. This is different from what you might think. If both teams have the same number of silver medals, the bronze medal count is looked at next.
Then, in the last seconds of a thrilling match, they beat France. This tied the US and China with 40 gold medals each, but the US now has 126 medals, 91 more than China.
Japan was in third place with 20 golds, the same spot they had in Tokyo 2021. With 18 gold medals, Australia came in fourth, which was their best medal haul ever. France, which hosted the Games, came in fifth with 16 golds. This was their best finish since 1900, when they won all eight medals.
U.S Team and Olympics
At the last eight Olympics, the US has won the most medals seven times. They came in second place only once, in Beijing 2008. They also won the most medals at Tokyo 2020, with 39. Only one more than China, they were in first place, but the rankings weren't fixed until the last day of competition.
This time, the two teams kept competing very hard. The US won eight gold medals in swimming and 14 gold medals in athletics, which were the two most important events. China did well in sports that required complicated moves or didn't involve going up against other people physically. Dive was their sport of choice and won all eight gold medals. Table tennis, shooting, and weightlifting each won five.
As for continents, the US is in charge of the Americas and China is in charge of Asia. Australia has the most votes (18-19-16), France has the most votes (16-26-22), and Kenya has the most votes in Africa (4-2-5). There are five medalists from Southeast Asia. The Philippines has two gold medals and two bronze medals, which puts them in first place with 37 points. Brazil is ranked 38th (2-0-1). Malaysia is in 80th place (0-0-2) and Singapore is in 84th place (0-0-1). Both are in Southeast Asia. |
