The Hermès Birkin and Chanel 2.55 frequently top lists of luxury handbags to invest in for a lifetime. The Himalaya Niloticus Crocodile Birkin or vintage Louis Vuitton trunks are examples of rare, exotic items that sell for substantial sums at auction.
That said, it might surprise you to learn that the priciest bag in the world isn't made by Hermes, Chanel, or Louis Vuitton. Most likely, you've never even heard of the company before.
In comes Italian luxury handbag brand Maison Boarini Milanesi, which recently unveiled a €6 million (roughly $7.18 million) bag to promote the importance of protecting our oceans. The Parva Mea bag has ten white gold butterflies and a diamond-paved clasp. It is made of semi-shiny alligator skin.
Over 130 carats of gems, including four butterflies encrusted with diamonds, three with sapphires, and the rest with Paraiba tourmalines, are set in the decorations. The brand's promise to donate €800,000 of the proceeds from each bag sold to clean up the world's marine environments is reflected in the distinctive design and gem selection, which were both inspired by the sea.

The world's most expensive handbag has been created to help raise awareness of ocean pollution
The item costs €6 million (£5.3 million), and €800,000 (£714,000) of the money is used to fund sea-cleaning initiatives.
The bag, which is made of semi-shiny alligator, is adorned with a diamond pavé accessory and ten white gold butterflies that have been set with more than 130 carats worth of sapphires, diamonds, and Paraiba tourmalines.
There are only three bags available, and each one takes 1,000 hours to make.
The designer of the bag, the upscale Italian company Boarini Milanesi, is worried about the effect non-biodegradable plastics will have on marine life preservation.
"Recently, I have seen even more plastic in the sea than when I was a child, due to the pandemic and all the gloves and face masks that are being carelessly thrown away," said Matteo Rodolfo Milanesi, a co-founder of the business.

His father, who was passionate about clean water and passed away when Mr. Milanesi was a teenager, served as the inspiration for the bag.
According to the mother of the asthma victim Ella Kissi-Debrah, moving would have been a top priority if the risks of air pollution had been known.
Every summer, between Greece and Turkey, "we used to spend at sea, and I was happiest when we would go on boat trips between the islands," he recalled.
"We would frequently see plastic bags floating on the water or patches of tar leaked by oil tankers, even though mass tourism was still a long way off," said one traveler.
To get the bags and bottles that were floating on the surface, his father used to dive into the water. He claimed that while he was building sandcastles on the beach, his father used to assist him in wiping tar patches from his hands.
Carolina Boarini, a co-founder of the company, said: "Blue sapphires symbolize the depths of the oceans, Paraiba tourmaline conjures images of the clear Caribbean waters, and diamonds speak of the transparency of water when it rains."
Given that the Mouawad 1001 Nights Diamond Purse holds the current Guinness World Record for being the priciest bag at US$3.8 million, the US$7 million price tag on the Parva Mea effectively surpasses the record for the title.
