Much like their Mancunian rivals, Manchester City have seen many highs during their colorful existence. With First Division/Premier League titles, FA Cups, League Cups and one Cup Winners' Cup, City stand tall as one of the most successful English football clubs of all time. Still, their history contains more than enough lows to even it up; for example, City are still the only English champions to be relegated the very next season.

The club was formed in 1880, under the name of St. Mark's, after an initiative by Arthur Connell (the rector of St Mark's Church) and his daughter, Anna Connell. After calling them self Gorton FC and Ardwick AFC for shorter periods, they would change their name to Manchester City in 1894. This coincides with some financial troubles that eventually led to restructuring of the club. The name change – combined with moving to the spacious grounds of Hyde Road a couple of years later – saw Manchester City become the most popular club in the city, with an enthusiastic fan base that followed them wherever they went. This rise in stature led to the club earning promotion to the First Division in 1899.

Club Atlético de Madrid, which is the full name, has played the role of the little brother to Real Madrid and being the team that always strive to upset the order. The club has also been notorious for a remarkable high incidence of sacked managers.

The club was founded in 1903, under the name of Athletic Club de Madrid. Its founders, three Basque students living in Madrid, considered the club a youth branch of Athletic Bilbao. The club first shirts with blue and white shirts were probably inspired by Blackburn Rovers. Eight years later they would change to red and white shirt and this time by the influence of Southampton. Visible above the circle, is a crown with a national arms design similar to that in the Spanish Royal crown. The logo has developed through the years from only containing the initials to adding a circle around the initials, and finally to the current design (adopted in 1941 with a slight redesign in 2001) with a crown above. The way the letters are stylized in layers are common among Spanish clubs and could for example be found in similar fashions in the logos of Granada CF, Real Betis, Sevilla and Sporting Gijón.
