Swedish Meatballs are a dish we collectively go gaga for every time we go to Ikea. The “Ikea Meatballs” my kids refer to become the thing they pine after the entirety of our walk through the top floor of the store. We got to the point where we’d started buying the frozen bags until one afternoon I decided I would make it myself.
Making Swedish Meatballs aren’t even that hard and with a really EASY trick in the meatball recipe below, you’ll have the perfect meatballs you see at Ikea instead of sort of bumpy meatballs like you’re used to when your mom makes them, Dinnerthendessert noted.
What makes IKEA Meatballs so special?
IKEA Swedish Meatballs are tender and delicious with a wonderful, savory cream sauce on top. They serve the meatballs with mashed potatoes and green beans, plus a spoonful of Ikea's sweet lingonberry jam on the side. The sweet-tart jam is a wonderful complement to the savory meatballs, and it also helps cut through the richness of the sauce. Finally, after a day of wandering the stores aisles – all of the meals at IKEA are surprisingly affordable and delicious, and a great way to feed a hungry family, according to Afamilyfeast.
How to make IKEA Meatballs?
“Staying at home can be hard, but we want to help make everyone’s lives that little bit easier and more enjoyable,” Ikea’s food manager said in the news release, Globalnews reported.

For The Cream Sauce:
- Dash of oil
- 40g butter
- 40g plain flour
- 150ml vegetable stock
- 150ml beef stock
- 150ml thick double cream
- 2 teaspoons soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
Cooking steps
STEP 1: Combine beef and pork mince and mix with your fingers to break up any lumps. Add finely chopped onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg and mix. Add milk and season well with salt and pepper.
STEP 2: Shape mixture into small, round balls. Place on a clean plate, cover and store in the fridge for two hours (this will help them hold their shape while cooking).
STEP 3: In a frying pan, heat oil on medium heat. When hot, gently add the meatballs and brown on all sides.

STEP 4: When browned, add to an ovenproof dish and cover. Place in a hot oven at 180c and cook for a further 30 minutes.
STEP 5: To make the sauce, melt 40g butter in a pan. Whisk in 40g of plain flour and stir for two minutes. Add 150ml of double cream, 2 tsp of soy sauce and 1 tsp of Dijon mustard. Bring it to simmer and allow sauce to thicken.
STEP 6: When ready to eat, serve with your favourite potatoes – either creamy mash or mini new boiled potatoes. Enjoy!, Goodto expressed.
Some useful tips
To make the meatballs lower in carbs, use almond meal to replace the breadcrumbs. Also, use 1 tablespoon of cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons of water to replace the flour in the gravy sauce. Just add the cornstarch mixture at the end, while continuously stirring over low heat until sauce has thickened. Replace heavy or thickened cream with reduced fat cream if you wish to reduce calories. If using half and half, be careful not to bring to a boil or it may separate. Garlic is not usually found in Swedish meatballs, but I prefer it and have included it for this reason. Omit if you don’t want to include it. I like to grate my garlic clove with the small part of a grater. You can use minced garlic if you prefer, Cafedelites listed. |
