On Monday, a federal appeals court upheld the 2023 verdict. Trump was not found guilty of rape but was ordered to pay Carroll $2.02 million for sexual assault and $2.98 million for defamation.

Monday's decision is about the second lawsuit. In January, Trump was also ordered to pay $83.3 million for the 2019 defamation case, which he is appealing.

Since these are civil cases, the jury found Trump "liable" but not guilty.

Despite winning the 2024 presidential election, Trump still faces legal issues. He was convicted earlier this year in a separate criminal trial for falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments. Sentencing was delayed after his election win.

Trump's victory also paused two other federal criminal cases against him, including one about hiding classified documents and another about trying to overturn the 2020 election results. A sitting president cannot be prosecuted under US Department of Justice policy.

A fourth criminal case in Georgia about the 2020 election results is also uncertain after Trump's win.

In 1997, in a case involving former President Bill Clinton, the US Supreme Court ruled unanimously that sitting presidents have no immunity from civil litigation in federal court over actions predating and unrelated to their official duties as president.
