Borussia Dortmund Key Dates

With the Bundesliga fixtures for the 2021/22 season finally having been announced, fans of the 18 German clubs will get a chance to plan their weekends around some of the more important games their respective clubs will face. Borussia Dortmund fans in particular will be able to look forward to a very critical and interesting start to their season as they take on Eintracht Frankfurt on match day one on August 14th/15th.

Eintracht Frankfurt had a very strong run during the second half of the 2020/21 Bundesliga season, only falling apart after the surprise announcement of head coach Adi Hütter moving to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Frankfurt will likely look to start the season strong under new head coach Oliver Glasner, who worked wonders with fellow top four contenders VFL Wolfsburg. Glasner made true Champions League contenders out of Die Wölfe, a side that had severely underachieved over the last few years.

Following what will likely be a hard fought opener against Frankfurt at the Westfalenstadion, Borussia Dortmund will host Bayern Munich in the Super Cup, and then subsequently travel to SC Freiburg. New head coach Marco Rose will face his former side Gladbach for the first time away on September 24-26, with the Foals also looking to make amends for a season that saw them falter after it was announced that Rose would be leaving for Dortmund in the summer.

Borussia Dortmund will have to hit the ground running if they are to challenge for the Bundesliga title in the upcoming season. But it certainly won’t be easy, as they also have games against TSG Hoffenheim, Bayer Leverkusen, Union Berlin and Borussia Mönchengladbach among their early season fixtures.

With Schalke 04 ultimately having been relegated in the previous season, Borussia Dortmund fans won’t have their usual Revierderby to look forward to. But they will be able to enjoy a much friendlier local derby against VFL Bochum. Bochum haven’t been in Germany’s top flight since 2010, so we can expect the team and their fans to give the game scheduled for December 10-12 a proper go.

Borussia Dortmund will go up against fellow title aspirants RB Leipzig for the first time on November 6th. Die Roten Bullen were easily disposed of by the Black and Yellows in the DFB Pokal final in May. And the Leipzig based side will likely be out for revenge which will make the game have much more of an edge to it. Considering Leipzig’s showings in recent years, we can expect this game and the reverse fixture on April 01-03 next year to have a good level of significance in the title race to come.

Last but not least, we of course have to mention Der Klassiker. Borussia Dortmund will face Bayern Munich for the first time on December 03-05 at home in a league game that will no doubt be a must win for Die Schwarzgelben.

Bayern have been a hurdle that Dortmund have struggled to overcome consistently and it will be imperative that Marco Reus and co. stamp their authority with a win in the first fixture. All three games against the Bavarian giants were close affairs last season, games Dortmund could have seen off had they been more clinical in attack and more resolute in defence.

Borussia Dortmund will then visit the Allianz Arena on Matchday 31 (April 22-24) for the return fixture. Here’s hoping Marco Rose will turn this Dortmund side into a team capable of seeing off Bayern the way he did with his Gladbach side on multiple occasions over his two year stint with the club.

The Matchday 31 fixture between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich could have a lot riding on it. With just three games to come after that, it is possible that this game could end up being the title decider. The Black and Yellows will end their season at home to Hertha Berlin on May 14.

Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus has opened up on his goals for his side's upcoming Bundesliga campaign.

Bayern München have won the German league title nine times in a row, and if Dortmund are to dethrone the Bavarians, they must find away to win games even when they're playing poorly, according to the 32-year-old.

"It is all in our hands. We need to show, and want to show, this continuity of winning matches and fight for the top places in the Bundesliga. In one year, everything now has to work out to have a chance against a team like Bayern München, who are the leaders in the Bundesliga," Reus said at a media event during Dortmund's digital summer tour, according to Hindustan Times, and added:

"They are winning even after bad performances, we were not able to do this in the last season. This is something which we need to start doing as well, find a way to win matches despite showing poor performances. Bayern did it, that is why they have won so many titles over the years."

Dortmund last won the Bundesliga title in the 2011/12 season.

The 2021/22 Bundesliga season will begin on the weekend of 13-15 August 2021. The top flight will go into the winter break after Matchday 17 on 17-19 December. League games will then resume on 7 January 2022. The 34th and final matchday is scheduled for Saturday, 14 May 2022.
