The holiday is more than an excuse to indulge your sweet tooth. The Peterson family from Forest Lake, Minnesota, started the tradition to honor their daughter, Malia, who died after a battle with cancer in 2010, as cited by Dayton Daily News. The 9-year-old girl loved to have ice cream for breakfast.
Malia Grace was just 9 when she died in December 2010 after a 14-month battle with cancer. In 2013, her family decided to honor her with about 50 family and friends joining a virtual birthday party for Malia and sharing photos of themselves eating ice cream on Facebook, MyFoxDetroit.com reported.
"In grand Malia style, it's become so much bigger than our little family," said Annette Peterson, Malia's mother. "There are now people literally around the world who are going to join us in eating ice cream to honor, cheer on, and remember all the childhood cancer warriors they know."
Since then, “Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day” has become an international event, with people from more than 83 countries partaking in the social media sharing in 2020.
“For those close to us it’s about celebrating Malia’s birthday, but in grand Malia style it’s become so much bigger than our little family,” Annette told the news station. “There are now people literally around the world who are going to join us in eating ice cream to honor, cheer on and remember all the childhood warriors they know,” she said.
“Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day” is being celebrated on Feb. 18, 2015, and even actor Kevin Bacon sent in a photo for it. Participants are being asked to share their photos using the hashtags #icecreamforbreakfast and #kidsgetcancertoo.
First celebrated by a group of close friends to commemorate her life and creativity, Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day went on to become a day to honor all the children who have or are battling childhood cancer. It exploded onto the scene, with thousands of people from all over the world taking part and spreading the message to thousands more.

If you’re not into ice cream or would like to promote this good cause in other ways, why not look for local hospitals and healthcare centers that are in need of donations, as they help parents and children fight this terrible disease? Hundreds of children every year benefit from the efforts of this hospital, and putting together an Ice Cream For Breakfast Social can help raise spirits and morale.
You can also contact your local child oncology ward and find out what kinds of supplies they need, or just come in and spend a day with the children playing games and talking. These special children are always eager to drink in the life and experiences of others and to share their own lives with those who come in. They know they’re sick, but they’re also children, and they don’t let that illness get them down, so stop by and be part of their life’s experience by sharing your stories and listening to theirs.
But isn’t this the wrong date!
There are actually two holidays that are very similar in name but founding for very different reasons. Today is not to be confused with Ice Cream for Breakfast Day which takes place on the first Saturday of February (i.e. Feb 6, 2021) created since the 1960s by housewife Florence Rappaport from New York.

While it's normally served as dessert, not breakfast, an affogato (gelato drowned in hot espresso) could definitely work as a morning pick-me-up. Just make sure to drink it fast. An Ice Cream-Topped Waffle
