Cats may be low-maintenance pets compared to their canine counterparts, but they shouldn’t be underestimated. The International Cat Association recognizes 73 different cat breeds — all of which come in a variety of shapes, sizes and, of course, distinct personality traits.
So, you’ve decided to bring a feline friend into your life. And after much research on different breeds, you think you’ve found one that is the right size for your space, plenty affectionate and will get along beautifully with your plants. But how can you really be sure that you’re adopting the right cat for you (or that your current furry friend is your perfect match)? You consult the stars, of course. Here, the best cat for every zodiac sign.
ARIES (MARCH 21 – APRIL 19): Abyssinian

One of the most energetic horoscope signs — and possibly one of the more demanding ones — Aries needs a cat with an equally adventurous nature. The Abyssinian, one of the oldest cat breeds, is a perfect match.
The Aby loves to explore and definitely isn’t scared to take risks. With a tendency to climb to the highest spots in the house, this is a breed that will literally take Aries by surprise on the regular.
The Abyssinian cat is quiet, intelligent and curious and is said to enjoy human company and become attached to its family. It enjoys space and activity, is a good climber, and will appreciate a garden full of trees and high places. Abyssinian cats are playful but tempered with some sense so are not too wreckless!

Taurus is one of the most loyal signs of the zodiac, which makes the American Shorthair one of its BFFs (best feline friends). This devoted cat breed will never let you down, and it’s a laid-back companion that’s happy on its own, but will always prefer to be by your side.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 20): Siamese Cat

Ruled by Mercury—the planet of communication—chatty Geminis need a companion that can match their gift of gab. Siamese cats are known for their impassioned purrs, which are in fact genuine attempts at communicating their needs. You two will be chatting the night away in no time.
Siamese cats are among the most vocal cats, enjoying long ‘conversations’ with their human friends. They are loving, loyal and crave human companionship, making them excellent family pets.
Their high intelligence allows them to learn things quickly which, coupled with a natural curiosity, means catching them opening and rummaging through your drawers and cupboards might happen more often than not.
Although they love a good snuggle on a warm lap, they also have high energy levels, which means it’s important to interact and play with them (they easily learn to play ‘fetch’). Give them plenty of fun toys, and make sure to fit in regular play sessions. Siamese cats have a good tolerance for children – as long as they’re taught how to interact with cats – and can also form firm friendships with the family dog.
Siamese kittens are high energy and can be quite boisterous, demanding attention and playtime. Kittenhood is the period when they develop their personalities, so it’s vital to ensure they get all the care and attention they need when they’re very young so that they will grow into fully socialised family cats.
Siamese cats make great companions – but they need companionship in return. They do not like to be alone for long periods and are best suited to households where someone is home most of the time (this could include the family dog or another cat). Siamese cats are not well suited to the great outdoors and should not be allowed to roam outside unsupervised.
CANCER (JUNE 21 – JULY 22): Somali

Cancer is one of the more emotional horoscope signs, with a real sensitive side. A Somali cat (the long-haired cousin of the Abyssinian) will give them the attention and affection they need, and will also use its playfulness to draw Cancer out of their shell.
This curious, interactive breed will constantly engage with its owner, whatever age they are.
Somali cats are highly intelligent. The Somali breed is good natured and playful and enjoy games and toys. Somali cats may be shyer and more independent than their Abyssinian cousins but enjoy human company. They are active and enjoy access to outdoor exercise.
LEO (JULY 23 – AUGUST 22): Persian

The self-appointed leader of the zodiac, Leo wants a cat with regal blood. The first choice has to be the Persian, loved by Queen Victoria and other members of the British royal family.
This is a lap cat above all else — one with high standards and a desire to be the center of attention. Luckily, Leo is a generous sort who is more than happy to treat the Persian like royalty.
A cat’s personality is based largely on where and how they’re raised, but the Persian cat personality is known for certain characteristics. For instance, they are said to be relatively quiet and sweet cats who love to lounge around. While they are affectionate and enjoy attention, they’re not usually the type to demand constant attention. In fact, they can be standoffish and reserved around new people until they get to know them.
VIRGO (AUGUST 23 – SEPTEMBER 22): Norwegian Forest Cat

The gentle Norwegian Forest Cat is quite mythical, having even been mentioned in Norwegian fairy tales. These cats can take a while to trust new people, but that makes securing their affection all the more special. Once you have their trust, they’ll be a lifelong loyal partner.
This is perfect for the equally caring, devoted Virgo, who may also be initially shy in the company of strangers.
The Norwegian Forest Cat tends to control her nutrition well, increasing her exercise and cutting down on intake when she feels it necessary. If provided with adequate play times and room to run and roam, she will not usually need to be kept on a nutrition plan.
Being territorial, the Norwegian likes room to make her own. She enjoys running, hiding and ambushing her toys. Perches and room to run should be provided.
The Norwegian must be groomed daily to keep the coat free from knots and tangles, especially during shedding season. This grooming can be incorporated into play time, but generally she enjoys being groomed. As with all thick coated cats, a hairball remedy may need to be given when regular shedding is occurring.
LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 22): Russian Blue

The intelligent, reserved Russian Blue is a good match for Libra. Culture and creativity is important to this horoscope sign, and it will find much to love about the breed, which was first shown in England in the 1880s after arriving in Europe by boat from the Russian port of Arkhangelsk on the White Sea.
Libra’s much-needed alone time will be made all the sweeter by the presence of a loyal, gentle Russian Blue.
Russian Blue cats are curious but calm, affectionate but not clingy, and very smart. They can be shy at first, but they are playful and loving once they feel comfortable.
While they are happy living with families and even other pets, Russian Blue cats tend to form a deep connection with only one person. Once they bond with someone, they will be very sensitive to their pet parent’s emotions – if you’re sad, don’t be surprised if your Russian Blue pats your face to cheer you up!
