2024 NFL Offseason Calendar: Important Events
February 20
Teams may designate Franchise or Transition players between this date and 3 p.m. CT on March 5.
February 27 – March 4
The NFL Scouting Combine takes place in Indianapolis, Indiana.
March 5
The deadline for teams to designate Franchise or Transition players is at 3 p.m. CT.
March 11 – March 13
Teams may communicate with and negotiate contracts with the certified agents of players (or the player directly, if he does not have an agent) whose 2023 contracts expire on March 13 at 3 p.m. CT. Players will then become unrestricted free agents. We call this the period of negotiation.
March 13
Unrestricted free agents are able to sign contracts with any team as of 3 p.m. CT on the 2024 League Year. In addition, the start of a new League Year signifies:
• Teams are required to exercise the options for 2024 on any players with contract option clauses before the deadline of 3 p.m. CT.
• Additionally, in order to maintain the right of first refusal (as well as compensation) in the event that the player signs an offer sheet with another team, teams must make qualifying offers to their restricted free agents whose contracts are about to expire before the deadline of 3 p.m. CT.
• The market opens for trading at 3 p.m. CT. Before this point, official trades cannot occur.
• All teams have to be under the 2024 salary cap by 3 p.m. CT.
• Finally, in order for teams to maintain exclusive negotiation rights with players whose contracts are about to expire and who have less than three seasons of free agent credit remaining, they must tender a minimum salary before 3 p.m. CT.
April 15
Teams with returning head coaches may begin offseason workout programs.
April 19
Deadline for restricted free agents to sign offer sheets.
April 24
Deadline for teams to exercise their right of refusal to restricted free agents who signed offer sheets elsewhere.
April 25 – 27
The NFL Draft takes place in Detroit.
May 2
Deadline for teams to exercise fifth-year options for players selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
May 3 – 6 or May 10 – 13
Teams are permitted to hold one three-day post-Draft rookie minicamp between one of the two indicated weekends.

| A prospective UFA who is not represented by an NFLPA Certified Contract Advisor (also known as a "Unrepresented Player") may speak with front office representatives of a new club directly about contract negotiations during the aforementioned two-day window, with the exception of the head coach and other coaching staff members. Verifying the player's status as an Unrepresented Player is the club's responsibility. | |
| No prospective unrestricted free agent is permitted to execute a contract with a new club until 4:00 p.m., New York time, on March 13. | |
| March 13 | The 2024 League Year and Free Agency signing period begin at 4:00 p.m., New York time. |
| Trading period for 2024 begins at 4:00 p.m., New York time, after expiration of all 2023 contracts. | |
| The 2024 League Year will conclude on March 13 at 11:59:59 p.m., New York time. All transactions that were turned in to the League office between 4:00 and 11:59:59 p.m. on March 13 will be included in a Personnel Notice that clubs will receive. | |
