2021 Kansas City Chiefs Future Opponents
The Kansas City Chiefs’ home and away opponents for the 2021 NFL season have been finalized.
The 2021 NFL schedule won’t officially be revealed until sometime in April, so we don’t have all the details on dates, times, and when the games will be played yet. However, now that the winner of the AFC South has been determined, the Chiefs’ opponents for next year are officially set. That includes the newly-introduced 17th regular-season opponent.
Home opponents:
- Broncos
- Chargers
- Raiders
- Steelers
- Browns
- Bills
- Cowboys
- Giants
Away opponents:
- Broncos
- Chargers
- Raiders
- Ravens
- Bengals
- Washington Football Team
- Eagles
- Titans
The NFL and NFLPA have agreed to add a 17th regular-season game to help offset the losses from the COVID-19-altered 2020 NFL season. According to a report from MMQB’s Albert Breer, the Chiefs would play the No. 1 ranked team in the NFC North from the 2020 season. That means Kansas City will go up against Green Bay at some point during the 2021 season. It’s not yet clear whether this will be a home or away game or how that issue will be determined. |
Reaction
The Chiefs will play the NFC East and the AFC North in 2021. The NFC division feels a bit weaker than the NFC South, which the Chiefs played in 2020. The AFC North, however, is a bit tougher than the AFC East, so it’s a bit of a trade-off. Typically, you’d rather have a weaker in-conference division when it comes to playoff seeding and the like, said Chiefswire.usatoday.com.
At first glance, these opponents have a great combination of tough teams and rebuilding teams. One thing that stands out about the away schedule is that former Chiefs QB Alex Smith could be the starter for the Washington Football Team if things remain as they are now. That could be a fun matchup between Patrick Mahomes and his former mentor. Another thing that stands out is that Andy Reid gets to return to Philadelphia to face his former pupil Doug Pederson. That should make for some interesting in-season drama.
As for the home schedule, they’re getting a lot of their toughest opponents at home. One that should have an interesting storyline is the Cleveland Browns, who feature former Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt. That’ll be an interesting one to watch. The main event, however, will be when the Buffalo Bills come to town with Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen facing off again.

Kansas City Chiefs find a way, win behind Chad Henne after Patrick Mahomes' concussionThe Kansas City Chiefs got two big plays from their quarterback near the game's end to preserve Sunday's 22-17 divisional-round playoff victory over the Cleveland Browns, but that player wasn't Patrick Mahomes. With Mahomes in the locker room after suffering a concussion and being knocked out of the game, Chad Henne made two big plays to save the Chiefs. On the Chiefs' final drive he scrambled 13 yards, ending with a dive to get to the first-down marker to set up a fourth-and-1 throw. He completed a 5-yard pass to Tyreek Hill to allow the Chiefs to continue the drive and run out the clock. Henne replaced Mahomes in the third quarter. Mahomes was hit hard by Browns linebacker Mack Wilson on a third-quarter rushing attempt and appeared unsteady as he got to his feet. He was taken to the injury tent on the sideline for a quick examination before heading to the locker room. Mahomes' status for next Sunday's AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead Stadium is unclear. The Chiefs beat the Bills 26-17 in Week 6 in Buffalo with Mahomes at quarterback. |
