Evolution has forced wild animals to hone their fighting skills and physical strength to survive. To match this pure power, humans must strengthen their bodies with specialized exercises and have a proper diet.

In the constant battle between predators and prey, size and strength can be decisive factors in helping an animal survive the cruelty of nature. There are several ways to measure power, including lift, bite, kick power, and overall power.

We'll define strength in absolute terms, not strength versus body size. Some of the animals on this list might be surprising. Here are 10 of the world’s strongest animals. Prepare to be amazed.

What is the fastest animal on Earth?

Found in North, Southern, and East Africa, the cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) holds the title of the fastest land animal. A natural-born sprinter, cheetahs can reach a top running speed of 70 miles per hour. More impressively, the feline can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just three short seconds! That’s better than a sports car!

Several physiological factors make cheetahs speed demons. For starters, they’re the slimmest of the big cats, sport long legs, and have small, lightweight heads. These factors make cheetahs aerodynamic dynamos. Also, when cheetahs run, they don’t move their heads, which adds to their aerodynamism.

Cheetahs’ spines, however, are the linchpin to the animal’s speed. They’re long, extraordinarily flexible, and act as a spring coil that allows the animal to maximize every stride. Lastly, cheetah muscles have a high percentage of what mammalogists call “fast-twitch fibers,” which augment their power and speed.

Cheetahs, however, cannot sustain high speeds for long. They’re sprinters, not marathon runners. It can take 30 minutes for a cheetah to recover from a 330-foot burst, which is about the length of a soccer field.

The largest cheetahs grow to 136 centimeters (53 inches) tall, 149 centimeters (4.9 feet) long, and they weigh between 21 and 72 kilograms (46 and 159 pounds).

Top 10 Strongest and Most Powerful Animals in The World

1. Elephant

When you think of sheer brute strength, you probably think of lions or gorillas. However, the reality is that the majestic and typically docile elephant wins the prize for the world’s strongest mammal.

An Asian elephant‘s trunk has more than 150,000 muscle fibers making up 40,000 distinct muscles. Comparatively, the trunk consists of very little fat and no bones or cartilage. In addition to being incredibly strong, elephant trunks’ tips have finger-like abilities. This allows elephants to use fine motor skills and manipulate very small objects with their trunks.

Yet elephants’ intense level of power also allows it to easily uproot fully grown trees or forcefully spray up to a gallon of water. In addition, elephants can carry up to 14,000 pounds, which is 7 tons. To put that into perspective, that weight translates to about 130 adult humans.

2. White rhinoceros

The white rhinoceros or white-lipped rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is the largest living species of rhinoceros and the second-largest mammal. Head and body length can reach 13.1 feet (4 m) and a weight of 5,070 lb (2,300 kg).

Despite their solitary lifestyle and normally peaceful personality, rhinoceros' temperament is very unpredictable. When threatened or cornered, they use their brute strength to attack anything they might consider a threat. They have been found to be most aggressive when protecting their babies.

Despite their enormous size and weight, rhinos are good runners. They can run at speeds of 30 to 34 mph. The armor-like build of these animals does not detract from their speed. Because of their strength, weight, and speed, being hit by a rhino is virtually the same as being hit by a speeding car. Rhinos are also capable of lifting other animals, toppling trees, and even overturning vehicles with ease.

3. Eagle

The king of the sky, found mostly throughout Africa and Asia is the Eagle. There are eagle species native to Australia, Central America, the Americas, and North America.

With the exception of vultures, eagles are the largest flying birds, with a wingspan of up to 1.8m. Eagles are members of the raptor family. This means they feed on big vertebrates, which they can spot up to 2 miles away. Number two on the top 10 strongest animals in the world boasts the origin of the saying “eyes as sharp as eagle’s”. Some of the larger eagles, the Harpy eagle, feed on monkeys, sloths, and coatis.

Records claim that some eagles have flown carrying prey weighing up to 6.8kg. While other species are known to have killed prey weighing between 30 and 37kg. This means that these eagles’ prey weighed 7-8 times more than them!

Eagles are known to use their heavy sharp beaks and powerful talons to rip the flesh from their prey. These birds are remarkable hunters and very powerful fliers.

4. Grizzly

The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is also one of the largest and strongest land animals. The average total length of this subspecies is 6.50 feet (ca. 2 m), the average shoulder height is 3.35 feet (ca. 1 m), and the length of the hind feet is 11 inches (ca. 28 cm). Their average weight is 270 kg for males and 200 kg for females.

Because of their size and muscular body, they can lift up to 80% of their body weight (about 500 kg). Although it belongs to the carnivores, it is actually an omnivore, but it can also hunt large prey such as cattle, moose, caribou, oxen, and even black bears. Bears have great strength in their limbs, which they skillfully use along with their claws to defend and hunt. In fact, an adult grizzly bear can effortlessly lift rocks weighing about 300 kg with a single paw.

A grizzly bear cub weighing 100 pounds (ca. 45 kg) would probably be stronger than the strongest male power athlete.

5. Anaconda

Anacondas are members of the boa family. The boa constrictor family that is. There are four species of anaconda: Green anacondas (Eunectes murinus), yellow anacondas (E. notaeus), Bolivian anaconda (E. beniensis), and the dark-spotted anaconda (E. deschauenseei).

The most famous, and also the biggest, is the green anaconda. These anacondas live in wetlands and river basins throughout South America, including parts of Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam, Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador.

Large green anacondas can weigh close to 200 pounds, making them the heaviest anacondas. Like other boas, anacondas use their powerful bodies to constrict their prey, as they lack venom to neutralize them. Ultimately, anacondas use their bodies to suffocate and crush their prey to death. It’s no wonder anacondas score themselves a spot on the top 10 strongest animals in the world list.

6. Gorilla

Gorillas are the largest apes (not monkeys!) and the strongest primate, known for their impressive strength. These powerful animals weigh up to 200 kg and can lift almost 2,000 kg – 10 times their body weight.

Compared to human beings, the arms of gorillas are particularly large, long, and strong – with an arm span of up to 2.5 meters. Their lifestyle of climbing and knuckle-walking strengthens their arms, and it’s estimated a gorilla is around 15 times stronger than the average human.

7. Giant grouper

The giant grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus) is one of the largest living species of bony fish. The giant grouper can grow to enormous size, with a maximum standard length of 110 in (270 centimeters), although they are more commonly found at 71 in (180 centimeters) and a maximum weight of 880 lb (ca. 399 kg).

The giant grouper is an opportunistic predator that feeds on a variety of fish, as well as small sharks, juvenile sea turtles, crabs, and mollusks, all of which are ingested.

8. Crocodiles

The crocodile has perhaps the strongest biting force on the planet. With its powerful jaws, the creature can instantly kill almost any prey by exerting up to 5,000 pounds of pressure per square inch (depending on the species). For comparison’s sake, a human can only bite with around 100 pounds per square inch. The key to the crocodile’s remarkable strength is its enormous jaw muscles. However, this ability does have one weakness: their mouths exhibit very little opening strength. It’s possible to keep the jaws clamped down with a rubber band.

9. Ox

Ever heard the phrase “strong as an ox” and wonder why? Number 9 on the list of top 10 strongest animals in the world is not a wild animal but a draught animal.

Also known as bullocks, oxen are male bovines trained as draught or work animals. Commonly, oxen have castrated adult male cattle. The function of castration inhibits aggression and testosterone production, making the ox more docile to work with.

Oxen are used for plowing, pulling carts, hauling wagons, and powering machinery that grinds grain or runs irrigation. The domestication of these creatures began around 4000 BC.

10. Hippopotamus

The hippo has the strongest bite of any herbivore, at a whopping 1.28M kg per m². No wonder it’s one of the most dangerous animals in Africa!

At first glance, the hippopotamus may seem like a placid, lumbering, veggie-munching softy, but when disturbed, it is one of the most dangerous creatures in the animal kingdom. To understand just how dangerous they are, it is necessary to fully appreciate the hippo’s sheer size. The average hippo can weigh anywhere between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds, and scientists have recorded some individuals with twice that weight. With the ability to open its mouth at a 180-degree angle, the hippopotamus has a bite that exerts around 1,800 pounds of force per square inch. It is a creature that can tussle with even the fiercest predators.

The strongest animals in the world relative to size & body weight

Dung Beetle

Dung beetles are the world’s strongest insect, and when looking at strength relative to bodyweight they are the pound-for-pound strongest animal in the world. A male dung beetle is able to lift objects a whopping 1,1,00 times its own weight – the equivalent of a human carrying 80 tons (or six double-decker buses loaded with people!).

Found on every continent except Antarctica, the male dung beetles need their strength to fight other males to compete for a mate, and to maneuver the balls of animal dung they use to either eat or to live in.

Rhinoceros Beetle

Rhinoceros beetles are the largest group of beetles in the world, reaching up to 15 cm long. This size helps the rhinoceros beetle claim the position of the second strongest insect, and the second strongest animal in the world when measuring strength related to body weight.

Rhinoceros beetles can lift around 850 times their own weight, an incredible achievement. If a human had equivalent strength of lifting 850 times their weight they would be able to lift a 65 ton object!

Leafcutter Ant

The 2 centimeter long leafcutter ant is the third strongest insect, with the ability to lift and carry something 50 times its own weight in its jaws. Not only this, but they have the stamina to carry these objects over long distances back to their nest. The equivalent would be a human lifting a truck with its teeth and walking a few kilometers with it.
