First things first -- this is a city. But wander the Old Town and you'll find it still has that small-town feel, with pretty medieval buildings that give a feel of how nearby Krakow was before mass tourism arrived.

The Old Town square is a glorious mix of architectural styles, there's a beautiful gothic church and a lot of Jewish heritage -- though the community was more or less wiped out during the Second World War.

The historic fortified town of Korčula was tightly built on a promontory that guards the narrow sound between the island and the mainland.

All of Korčula’s narrow streets are stepped with the notable exception of the street running alongside the southeastern wall. Its streets arranged in a herringbone pattern allowing free circulation of air but protecting against strong winds.

Some of the towns on the list with Korčula are Giethoorn in the Netherlands, Guimarães in Portugal, Roscoff inn France and Anghiari in Italy.

Locals say adventurer Marco Polo was born here.

One of the joys of travelling, as we all know, is discovering beautiful places you didn't have a clue about before. For me, Nafplio is such a place. Unlike Greece's most famous seaside towns, it's not on an island, but nestled on the south coast of the Peloponnese peninsula, a two-hour drive from Athens. It's a popular weekend getaway for Athenians and a beguiling escape, too, for travellers looking to soak up the charms of coastal Greece without the crowds you'd find on Santorini and Mykonos.

History buffs are especially drawn to Nafplio as it was the first capital of the modern Greek state, from 1823 to 1834, before Athens claimed the mantle. I'm here on a group tour that has seen us zig-zag up and down the Greek mainland, calling in at UNESCO World Heritage-listed archaeological sites such as Delphi, Olympia and Mycenae.

With the largest fishing fleet in Italy, a world famous Dancing Satyr netted from the sea, a labyrinthine North African Kasbah in the town centre and some delightful architecture, Mazara del Vallo offers a fascinating mix of culture, history, ethnicity and art.

Mazara del Vallo (spelt Mazzara until the Second World War) was founded in the 9th century BC by the Phoenicians, who used it as a strategic emporium for their trans-Mediterranean trading interests. Floating along on the familiar tide of Sicilian history, Mazara soon became part of Magna Graecia, when it served as a port for nearby Selinunte, and then to the Romans, during whose dominance, in the 3rd century AD, the town's most famous son, San Vito, was born. After a life of miracles, including curing Diocletian’s son of epilepsy, San Vito was martyred in Rome in 303 AD by the same, ungrateful Emperor.

The North Devon village of Clovelly was labelled “cute” by the American publisher. Clovelly donkeys and sledges were singled out, proving the incredibly steep streets of the village are one of its main attractions.

Clovelly is used to being named one of the prettiest places in the country, being the third most trending UK travel destination on Airbnb and having been named Britain’s most Instagrammable village 2020.

The village was once owned by William the Conqueror and has been in private ownerships for centuries.

Dinkelsbühl is a town in central Franconia with about 12,000 inhabitants. It is an important tourist resort on the Romantic Road, the now internationally known German holiday route. The road stretches over 29 villages and 460 km – starting on the Main in Würzburg over the west of Franconia to Bayerisch-Schwaben, through a piece of Upper Bavarian territory to the Ostallgäu to Füssen.

The Old Town of Dinkelsbühl has been awarded the European Cultural Heritage Heritage By the EU’s European Heritage Label initiative. This state award is given to cultural monuments, cultural landscapes or memorials that are considered significant at European level. The special thing about Dinkelsbühl is that of the 780-house old town, almost 75% of the houses are older than 350 years.

Mostar's Stari Most, or "Old Bridge," built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, was long considered one of the finest examples of Balkan Islamic architecture.

Arcing high across the Neretva river, it's one of the most famous sights in the Balkans, and traditionally locals dive from the bridge -- today it's a stop on the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series.

The bridge was destroyed in November 1993 by Croat forces during the Balkan wars. A reconstructed bridge was built in 2004, and today, Mostar is a beloved destination in Bosnia and Herzigovina, and a popular day trip from Dubrovnik, over the border in Croatia.

10.Kenmare, Ireland

Kenmare's one of Ireland's big foodie destinations - CNN

Kenmare is located in County Kerry south of Killarney National Park — and that damn tacky touristy town of the same name.

The “little nest” of Kenmare is part of the famed Ring of Kerry, making it a prime stop for a spot of lunch and a pint. But before you go on your merry way, check out the area’s Bronze Age stone circle, one of the largest in southwest Ireland. The peaceful glens and streams of Gleninchaquin make a wonderful backdrop for a picnic, which you can work off on a walk along the Kenmare section of the Beara Way.

Especially if you fancy visiting a colourful town in Kerry with buckets of charm and history stretching back thousands of years!
