Manchester Derby: Man City vs Man United

Man City vs Man United, has become one of the most high-profile derbies in English football.

The red half of Manchester doesn’t even seem to consider the blue half to be their biggest rivals; Man U’s main hatred is reserved for Liverpoo.

Man City’s fans point out that United’s home, Old Trafford, isn’t even technically in Manchester, while United fans mock City’s Etihad ground as the “Emptyhad.” Both accuse each other’s fanbases of being recent “plastic” additions, while the rest of the country probably sees little difference between the two anymore.

The all-time record, as of March 4, 2021, shows 184 meetings in all competitions, with City winning 55, United 76, and 53 drawn.

The first league game between the two clubs was in 1894, and the first meeting in the top division was in 1906. But according to Wikipedia, “Before the Second World War, many football supporters in Manchester watched City one week and United the next. After the war, a stronger rivalry developed and following both teams became uncommon.”

Merseyside Derby: Liverpool vs Everton

Merseyside simply means “by the side of the River Mersey,” on which the city of Liverpool was founded.

The Merseyside Derby between Liverpool and Everton is the longest-running top flight derby in English football. The two having played at least twice every season since 1962.

As of February 2021, Everton and Liverpool have played an astonishing 235 times since 1894, with Liverpool winning 93 to Everton’s 66, with 76 draws.

The Mersyside Derby is still referred to on occasion as the Friendly Derby, particularly after incidents such as the two grounds being connected by interlocking red and blue scarves after Hillsborough, and the longstanding policy of not segregating fans in the stands — a real rarity in English soccer, much less in derbies.

North-west Derby: Manchester vs Liverpool

Manchester and Liverpool are the two biggest cities in North West England and they have spent hundreds of years vying for regional supremacy. Manchester was historically the largest and most important city in northern England, but Liverpool rose to prominence in the 18th century due to its status as a major port. It eventually toppled Manchester and became known as the British Empire's second city, having emerged as the key metropolitan centre in the north.

Each club can claim historical supremacy over the other: United for their 20 league titles to Liverpool's 19 and Liverpool for being European champions six times to United's three. Manchester United lead in terms of total trophies won, with 66 to Liverpool's 64. Manchester United also lead in the head-to-head record between the two teams, with 81 wins to Liverpool's 68; the remaining 58 matches have finished as draws

The A23 Derby: Crystal Palace vs Brighton and Hove Albion

In the case of the rivalry between Crystal Palace and Brighton and Hove Albion, literally none of that is the case. In fact, people don’t even agree on the name of the thing: Is it the A23 Derby or the M23 Derby?

Many people, including the media, call it the M23 Derby, which actually makes no sense because that road doesn’t connect the two clubs. The A23 does, more or less. So count that among the oddities of the Palace-Brighton rivalry.

The other oddity is the distance between the two, a relatively large 37 miles. However, until 2011, when Crawley Town made the Football League, Palace was the closest professional club to Brighton. But that still didn’t make them rivals.

When the Eagles and Seagulls meet up on February 22, 2021 at Brighton, it will be their 107th meeting in leagues and cups. Overall, Brighton have 40 wins to Palace’s 27, with 39 draws. Along the way, more than two dozen players have suited up for each club, which really just adds to the drama.
