Voting for Trump’s impeachment

Cheney, Wyoming's lone U.S. Representative, was joined by nine others: John Katko (New York), Adam Kinzinger (Illinois), Fred Upton (Michigan), Jaime Herrera Beutler (Washington State), Dan Newhouse (Washington State), Peter Meijer (Michigan), Anthony Gonzalez (Ohio), David Valadao (California), and Tom Rice (South Carolina). Together they constituted the largest group to ever vote to impeach a president from their own party. When Trump was impeached the first time in 2019, Republicans unanimously voted against it.

Why she stayed on the opposite side against Trump’s party?

U.S. Representative Liz Cheney broke with the majority of her fellow Republicans in laying blame squarely on President Donald Trump for the deadly riot that Americans watched unfold in the U.S. Capitol a week ago. And she has no qualms about it, Reuters reported.

“I’m not going anywhere,” the three-term congresswoman proclaimed to reporters after some back-bench Republicans angrily demanded on Wednesday that she be fired from her position as the No. 3 Republican in the House of Representatives.

The move made her the most senior Republican to formally break with Trump following his November election defeat.

The impeachment resolution, she said, was “a vote of conscience” during a crisis not seen since the U.S. Civil War.

House Democrats were spearheading an impeachment that charges Trump of inciting insurrection, no small accusation.

Under pressure after the voting

Rep. Matt Rosendale, a freshman from Montana and one of the lawmakers taking the lead in the effort, won’t say how many lawmakers have signed on to the petition so far. His office says the timing is still “up in the air in” on when he will submit the resolution, according to Time.

In the meantime, the conference is brimming with drama, with battle lines forming between those who would rather forget Trump ever led their party, and those who think his brand of politics is its future.

“This is basically a right-wing version of cancel culture,” says Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, a Trump critic and one of the 10 Republicans to vote in favor of impeachment. ‘”If you don’t like Donald Trump, and you vote against Donald Trump, we’re going to cancel you. We’re going to say that you don’t have a place in this party’…It’s no different.”

House Republican leadership did not whip members to vote either way on impeachment, leaving lawmakers to come to their own decision about whether the President incited a pro-Trump to attack the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

Florida representative and Trump ultra-loyalist Matt Gaetz flew into Cheyenne, Wyoming, on Thursday to help whip up a crowd against Liz Cheney, the No 3 House Republican and member.

Gaetz also called the daughter of former vice-president Dick Cheney “a Beltway bureaucrat turned fake cow girl that supported an impeachment that is deeply unpopular in the state of Wyoming”.

In the fight for control of the Republican party from now until the 2022 midterms, Trump and his backers currently seem to be winning, despite losing the White House. At the very least, Cheney can expect a stern primary challenge.
