Who are behind the couple Jake Sully and Neytiri?

Sam Worthington as Jake Sully

Sam Worthington returns to the “Avatar” franchise as Jake Sully, who now lives permanently as a Na’vi after his consciousness was transplanted from his human body to his Na’vi avatar at the end of the original film. Jake is the leader of the Pandora forest tribe, known as the Omaticaya people.

“We started work on it in, I think, 2015 was when I first saw things of it and 2017 was when we first started. It’s been a gradual continued process, like a big journey,” Sam Worthington told Variety of making the “Avatar” sequel. “It’s a labor of love rather than making a movie. That’s what it feels like.”

Worthington added about the film’s extensive underwater scenes, “We were doing something that had never been done before. But James Cameron and I get along because I’m fearless. If he asks me to, I’m going to dive in. I’m good at putting aside all the mechanics and just focusing on ‘What does the boss need me to do?’”

Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri

Zoe Saldaña reprises her role of Neytiri, Jake Sully’s wife and one of the best warriors among the Omaticaya people. The actor managed to hold her breath underwater for five minutes while filming diving scenes. Saldaña told Variety that getting the chance to work with James Cameron is a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration.

“I got to work with my idol at a very early stage of my career,” she said. “If it wasn’t for Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley, these iconic characters of the ’80s, where would I be? There are so many themes that will resonate with people, starting with the power of family… Family is not just the one that you’re born into, but it’s also the one that you choose or chooses you.”

Avatar: The Way of Water focuses on Jake Sully and Neytiri’s family in Pandora, with the two characters primarily being parents to teenagers. The sequel has been in the making for the past 13 years since Avatar’s 2009 premiere, with director James Cameron finally delivering the epic sci-fi follow-up to the highest-grossing movie of all time. While many of the original cast and characters return, such as Sam Worthington as Jake Sully and Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, Avatar: The Way of Water also introduces plenty of new faces in the world of Pandora, including Kate Winslet as Ronal and several young actors (and one familiar) as Jake and Neytiri’s five children.

Who are behind Tonowari and Ronal?

Besides Jake Sully and his wife, Avatar: The Way of Water introduced a new couple to the audience. Tonowari and Ronal are the two leaders of the Metkayina sea people, a new "shelter" for Jake Sully's extended family.

Cliff Curtis plays Tonowari, the leader of the Metkayina clan and Ronal’s husband. “I genuinely think it’s going to be one of the most amazing cinematic experiences I’ve ever had. I don’t think the world’s really ready for what’s going to happen. It’s beyond exciting,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

Curtis has appeared in Sunshine, Training Day, The Meg, and Doctor Sleep.

Kate Winslet as Ronal

Kate Winslet is one of the most highly anticipated additions to Avatar 2. She’s playing Ronal, a freediver in the oceanic Metkayina clan. “Whilst my role is actually relatively small comparative to the lengthy shoot (I will only have around one month with Jim and the principal actors), it is a pivotal character in the ongoing story,” she told Variety. Kate Winslet held her breath for 7 minutes underwater to complete her scene.

One of Winslet’s most famous roles is in another James Cameron movie: Titanic, playing Rose.

Who plays Colonel Miles Quaritch?

Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch

Stephen Lang is back in villain mode as Colonel Miles Quaritch, who died at the end of the first “Avatar” film. How is Quaritch back? It’s a relatively straightforward reveal in “The Way Water,” but still one that’s best to discover in theaters. This time, however, Lang appears as a Na’vi avatar and not a human character. “Doing the water work was challenging and difficult,” he told Variety. “But we were really led by a terrific team of professionals who were with us every step of the way, making sure that we were as safe as one can possibly be when one is doing a knife fight 25 feet below the surface. I enjoyed pretty much every moment of it, even when it’s painful and even when it’s frustrating, even when I just felt things were really going to hell, you know, still, I can’t think of any place I would rather be than there.”

Who are behind young new characters?

Much like the original 2009 Avatar, the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water,is full of blue cat-alien people known as the Na’vi. Unlike its predecessor, Avatar 2 focuses a lot on the second generation, specifically the children of former Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña). The two of them have a whole brood of kids, plus a human tagalong. It’s all fun and family bonding until about halfway through the movie, when you realize the names of all the kids blurred by at the beginning of the movie, and it’s hard to tell who’s who after that.

Sigourney Weaver as Kiri

Believe it or not, Sigourney Weaver returns to the world of Avatar, despite her character definitely dying in the prior film.

Dr. Grace Augustine, an expert on all things related to Pandora and the head of the Avatar program, represents the last vestige of peace between humans and Na'vi before things turn violent. One of her attempts to build relations with native Na'vi even involved building an educational facility, which is why so many of the Na'vi are able to speak English. She's reluctant to accept Jake on her team since he knows absolutely nothing about this planet, but his acceptance into the Omaticaya tribe begins a friendship between them. She's one of the few humans to help Jake rebel against the RDA, but when making a daring mistake, Grace is shot by Quaritch.

He gave Neteyam many expectations that he would take good care of the children, help them get out of danger and inherit his bravery later. Playing the role of Neteyam is young actor Jamie Flatters. The rookie born in 2000 has made an impression in the series School of Good and Evil.

Accompanying Neteyam is his younger brother Lo'ak, who is also the second son of Jake Sully and Neytiri. Contrary to Neteyam, Lo'ak loves to travel and often makes his parents worry about his actions. Handsome actor born in 2001 Britain Dalton plays as Lo'ak. Before that, he played in Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One project, but only with a public role.

Trinity Jo-Li Bliss as Tuk

Next is the youngest child of the Sully family - Tuk. Tuk is described as "a wet little girl", but loves her siblings and parents, especially Kiri. Asian-American child star Trinity Jo-Li Bliss is the one who plays Tuk in Avatar 2, and this is also her first movie role.

The children made new friends in the forest when they came to the Metkayina clan. The Tonowari family has 2 children, a son and a daughter, Aonung and Reya are who relatively played by Filip Geljo (born in 2002) and Bailey Bass (born in 2003).

Most special character: Spider (Jack Champion)

Photo IMDb
Photo IMDb

Spider grew up around the Na’vi, spending time with Norm and Max in the labs and bonding with Jake and Neytiri’s kids.

While Jake believes Neytiri will always see him as “an alien”, their kids (Neteyam, Lo’ak, Tuk, and Kiri, the latter of whom they adopted) see him as a cousin, if not a brother.

Along with Kiri, Miles "Spider" Socorro is another one of Jake and Neytiri's adopted children, but Neytiri isn't as much of a supporter of Spider given that he is 100% human.

Spider's introduction brings forth a shocking revelation - Miles Quaritch has a son. Following Quartich's initial death, Miles Jr. was abandoned by the human colony and was too young to make the long and physically draining experience of returning to Earth, so Jake and Neytiri accepted him into their familial circle (though the matriarch is still untrustworthy of humans).

Being human also means that Spider can't breathe the air on Pandora and requires a rebreather to walk around in unpressurized areas, making his life on Pandora likely even more difficult. He earns the trust of his father, even going as far as to save him in the final battle, but the film ends with the father and son continuing to be estranged.
