Early Monday morning, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the nominees for the 2021 Oscars, with eight movies vying for Best Picture. The winners will be announced during the Oscars ceremony that airs on ABC on April 25. For many loyal Oscar viewers, who enjoy checking out all the Best Picture nominees before the show, this is typically crunch time. Gotta see all those movies to know who should win, who got snubbed, and who exactly plays The Father. (It's Anthony Hopkins.)

This year will be the same in many respects, but, given the disruption of the movie business and number of nominees that debuted exclusively streaming services, watching all the nominees isn't as simple as driving up to your local theater or stopping at a video store. Most of the nominees are available online in some capacity, but some require subscription services while others can be purchased online (often at a lofty price point).

"The Father"

‘The Father’ is a poignant and powerfully moving tale about a man slowly losing his bearings as he succumbs to old age and struggles to hold onto the disheveled fragments that are his memories now. The great Anthony Hopkins plays a man who suffers from a neurodegenerative condition and is losing his grip on reality as his daughter Anne (a very compelling Olivia Colman) watches helplessly, losing her father before he is even gone.

Anthony is an 80-year-old man, defiant and proud, preferring to live by himself and rejecting the assistance of hired help that his daughter, Anne, keeps insisting on bringing into the house. But hiring carers is becoming something of a necessity for Anne, who witnesses her father’s slow spiral into dementia without being able to do anything about it. Some days, a total stranger insists she’s Anne, and other days his apartment looks completely different and unfamiliar. Soon, Anthony cannot tell the reality from the imagination as all his memories turn hazy and disorderly. Unsure of everything and wary of everyone, Anthony lashes out.

"Judas and the Black Messiah"

Inspired by real events, Judas and the Black Messiah tells the infuriating story of the betrayal and assassination of Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya), a peaceful activist in the 1960s.

Hampton was just 21 when he was shot and killed at point-blank range as he slept in his bed, by the FBI and Chicago Police Department, who had targeted him as part of an effort to silence his calls for social change - but to bring him down they needed a mole.

In exchange for cash and being let off the hook for a series of petty crimes, William O'Neal (Lakeith Stanfield) agreed to infiltrate the Black Panther Party (BPP) on behalf of the FBI and its chief J. Edgar Hoover, who was willing to use whatever means necessary to snuff out the movement that Hampton had helped to foster.

As well as rising through the ranks of the party O'Neal grew close to Hampton, who was at the time the chairman of the Illinois chapter of the BPP and a founder of the multicultural Rainbow Coalition, which had successfully united a diverse array of oppressed communities across the political spectrum.

However, with the launch of an outrageous disinformation campaign and the help of O'Neal, the FBI - led by agent Roy Mitchell (Jesse Plemons) - actively encouraged violence between the BPP and other radical organizations, and killed Hampton during an early-morning raid, after he'd been drugged.
