NASA's Earth-observing satellites found that the coldest place in the world is the East Antarctic Plateau, which sits above a ridge, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center said in a Facebook post. December 16th. Satellite images show the temperature on this plateau at -93.2 degrees Celsius.
The temperature is lower than some places on Mars, the planet is farther from the Sun than Earth. The average temperature on the red planet fluctuates around -62.8 degrees Celsius during the year, ranging from 21.1 degrees Celsius near the equator in the summer to -140 degrees Celsius in the polar regions during the winter months.
Such extreme cold temperatures can be dangerous to humans. For example, at -70.5 degrees Celsius, it takes a person just two minutes to get frostbite, according to data from the National Weather Service. Cold weather can be more dangerous than hot weather. A study published in 2015 in The Lancet that analyzed more than 74 million deaths in 384 locations in 13 countries found that cold weather is 20 times more deadly than hot weather.
The coldest temperature ever recorded by satellite sensors is also -93.2 degrees Celsius, detected along a ridge between Dome Argus and Dome Fuji also over Antarctica in August 2010. The coldest temperature record based on a terrestrial thermometer is -89.2 degrees Celsius, recorded on July 21, 1983 on the Antarctic plateau, at the Vostok station of the Soviet Union. Before this record, the coldest temperature was - 88.3 degrees Celsius also at Vostok station in 1968.
Except for Hawaii, the rest of the US states all experience sub-zero temperatures at some point of the year, ranging from -51 degrees Celsius in the northern states to -18 degrees Celsius in Florida. Hawaii has never recorded temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius. Currently, the United States is about to experience cold air from the Arctic moving from Canada to the south in the coming days.
